Saints take Tyler Shough in 2025 NFL Draft shocker as Shedeur Sanders’ wait continues

Tyler Shough’s age is nothing compared to the length of the 54-year streak that he snapped.

The Saints drafted Shough with the No. 40 pick — the eighth of the second round — and sent the first hint of Friday night that Shedeur Sanders’ free fall was just getting started.

Shough, 26, was considered by some teams to be the most game-ready of all the quarterbacks available after Cam Ward went No. 1 overall.

He was the No. 1 quarterback on some teams’ boards and No. 2 on the Saints’ board, according to ESPN.

“In a perfect scenario, I play 10, 12 years and I’m still mid-30s, and I think any team would ask for that,” Shough said.

It makes sense that Shough landed with the Saints, who are facing the uncertainty of Derek Carr’s shoulder injury and the potential that he might not play at all in 2025.

He went out to lunch with Saints quarterbacks coach Scott Tolzien after Louisville’s pro day.

“I was talking to my boys after,” Shough said, “and I went, ‘Man, I hope it works out.’ ”

It was the third straight year (fifth-rounder Spencer Rattler in 2024 and fourth-rounder Jake Haener in 2023) and the fifth time in the last six years that the Saints have drafted a quarterback.

But it was the historic first time since 1971 that the franchise used a first- or second-round pick on a quarterback.

Back then, it was Archie Manning, whose namesake grandson Arch will be draft-eligible in 2026.

“[Shough is] the kind of guy you want,” an offensive ᴀssistant told The Post. “He’s a gym rat. He works hard. He is athletic. He can move. I saw a lot of Andy Dalton scenarios in my head watching his tape.”

CB Will Johnson, who was a consensus top-10 pick at the start of last season, slipped all the way to the Cardinals at No. 47.

He suffered a season-ending turf toe injury in October, didn’t run a 40-yard dash during the predraft process because of a hamstring injury and there were concerns about a knee issue dating back to missed time in 2023.

“They were saying things about my knee and all that and I haven’t really dealt with it in two years,” Johnson told reporters. “I’m definitely frustrated. I know I’m healthy.”

RB Quishon Judkins’ mother answered the phone when the Browns called to make him the No. 36 pick.

His family and friends exploded in celebration while he was out of the room.

The television broadcast implied that Judkins was in the bathroom, but Judkins told the Browns Radio Network that he was just getting a drink from the kitchen.

The Ravens drafted pᴀss rusher Mike Green — who fell out of the first round despite being projected to be as high as the second edge taken — with the No. 58 pick.

Green faced two separate Sєxual ᴀssault allegations years apart, but he denied both.

It was a curious choice by the Ravens considering that their All-Pro kicker, Justin Tucker, is under investigation for accusations of Sєxual misconduct by 16 mᴀssage therapists at eight different Baltimore area spas.

Jonah Savaiinaea felt like it was written in the stars for him to land with the Dolphins with the No. 37 pick.

The American Samoa native grew up in Hawaii — like his new quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa.

“ As soon as I saw the Florida [phone] number, I thought Tua,” Savaiinaea said. “I’ve only blocked for Polynesian quarterbacks in my career. God doesn’t make mistakes.”
