Kansas City Chiefs hit by scheduling blow after bombshell request to the NFL

The NFL is reportedly not ready to grant the Kansas City Chiefs’ request to be a staple in the league’s Christmas Day game.

Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and Co. have played on December 25 for the past two seasons.

Earlier in April, The Athletic reported that the recently-dethroned Super Bowl champions requested to be regulars in the December 25 lineup.

However, NFL VP of broadcast planning and scheduling Mike North recently addressed the apparent inquiry from Clark Hunt’s team.

Speaking on the It’s Always Gameday in Buffalo podcast, North said, ‘I’m not sure that’s gonna become a tradition quite the way Thanksgiving is.’

‘I mean, think about what it took for that tradition, right? The Lions since the ’30s, the Cowboys since the ’60s,’ he added. ‘We didn’t commit to a third site on Thanksgiving when we brought that back about 20 years ago.

‘We rotated that around. I imagine we’re gonna keep rotating Christmas around, too.’

North added that it’s a lot from the team’s fans to show up every year on Christmas. He also previously noted that the Chiefs will not be good forever.

There are three games slated on Christmas Day as part of the 2025 regular season, according to reports.

Two of those games will be streamed on Netflix with the third being broadcast on Amazon Prime. The Chiefs are again expected to be among the teams on the slate.

In 2023, Kansas City was beaten, 20-14, at Arrowhead by the Raiders in a loss that threatened to derail their bid for back-to-back Super Bowl crowns.

Last year, meanwhile, the Chiefs beat the Steelers 29-10 in front of a TV audience that reportedly exceeded 24million.

After the report first surfaced, he suggested that it’s better to select the slate every year and possibly preserve a flex option.

‘Never say never,’ North said. ‘Let’s see what the next few years bring. But I don’t think we’re today gonna commit to a permanent third host for Thanksgiving, a permanent host for Black Friday, or a permanent host for Christmas.’
