Ed Sheeran reveals why he won't perform Super Bowl halftime show after Kendrick Lamar controversy

Ed Sheeran has said he can’t ever picture himself performing the Super Bowl halftime show. ‘No one wants to see that,’ the English singer-songwriter said.

Many of the world’s biggest artists have taken center stage at halftime of the NFL’s end-of-season showpiece, including Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Madonna and Bruce Springsteen.

Back in February, Kendrick Lamar performed a 13-minute cameo during the Philadelphia Eagles’ victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. It was the most watched in history, with an average audience of 133.5million viewers.

Sheeran has revealed that he held talks about performing at the Super Bowl around a decade ago but the opportunity never materialized.

And now the pop sensation claims he could only ever envisage performing as part of someone else’s show.

‘There was a conversation about 10 years ago to go on with someone, and I think that would be the only way that I would do it,’ he told the Call Her Daddy podcast.

‘I don’t think English artists… I mean there are some that have the pizzazz of (the) Super Bowl – fireworks, dancers, blah blah blah.

‘But me going up there and being like: “Here’s the A-Team, here’s Perfect…” No one wants to see that.’

Sheeran continued: ‘Say it was Beyonce’s show and she had all the bells and whistles and then there was moment where we sang Perfect together, that makes sense to me. But I can’t picture myself doing it.’

Lamar’s polarizing Super Bowl halftime performance reportedly drew more than 100 complaints to the Federal Communications Commission – including some about his feud with Drake and one accusing Serena Williams of promoting ‘gang affiliation.’

Lamar performed his hit Drake diss ‘Not Like Us’, which has been the subject of a defamation lawsuit from Drake.

It refers to the Canadian as a ‘certified pedophile,’ though Lamar did not rap those words on stage in February.

Lamar did leave in other controversial lines from the song, such as ‘Say, Drake, I hear you like ’em young’ and ‘Tryna strike a chord and it’s probably A minor.’

Around six weeks after the performance, TMZ obtained 125 complaints sent to the FCC regarding the performance.
