Giants star makes ultimate sacrifice for Russell Wilson

Giants star makes ultimate sacrifice for Russell Wilson

Russell Wilson will wear his signature No 3 jersey, as he joins the New York Giants thanks to cornerback Deonte Banks vacating the number upon the quarterback’s arrival.

On Wednesday, April 2, the Giants revealed that Wilson will maintain his jersey number for the 14th NFL season.

The announcement came after Wilson signed a one-year deal worth $10.5million with the team.

Adam Schefter then reported that Banks will be wearing No 2 in his third season in the league. The Giants selected the 24-year-old Maryland product with the 24th pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Wilson praised Banks on X after the gesture, writing, ‘Salute to my guy & young star Tae Banks!’

‘Grateful for you letting me wear #3 King! Full of graтιтude,’ Wilson added with two praying hands emojis.

Wilson wore No 3 for 10 seasons with the Seattle Seahawks, two seasons with the Denver Broncos, and most recently in a single-season stint with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

According to Pro Football Reference, Wilson is the 18th player to wear No 3 for the Giants. The last Giant to wear the number before Banks was Sterling Shepard, who wore No 3 from 2021 to 2023. He was preceded by two backup quarterbacks Alex Tanney (2019) and Geno Smith (2017).

The Steelers began their season with an abundance at the position, signing Wilson and rising star Justin Fields.

Unfortunately, after losing their sixth postseason game in a row, tied for the longest active streak in the league, the franchise has seen their longest playoff drought since 1972, not having won a playoff game in eight years.

Fields, 25, appeared in 10 games and completed 106 of 161 attempts for 1,106 yards and five touchdowns. He also rushed for 289 yards and found the end zone five times.

On the other hand, the 36-year-old Wilson made 11 appearances, 214 completions for 336 attempts, and tallied 2,482 yards for 16 touchdowns. Wilson did find as much success in rushing with 11 carries for 43 yards and two touchdowns.

Despite their collective efforts, the Steelers ended their season with a four-game losing streak and a 10-7 record before falling to the Baltimore Ravens in the Wild Card round.

Fields and Wilson will remain nearby after the former took over the quarterback opening at the New York Jets after the team parted ways with Aaron Rodgers.
