Jets owner Woody Johnson fires back at NFLPA over ‘F’ grade on ‘bogus’ report card

PALM BEACH, Fla. — F that.

Jets owner Woody Johnson fired back at the NFLPA on Monday after the players’ union gave him an F on their recent report cards.

“My first read is I think it was totally bogus,” Johnson said at the NFL’s annual meeting. “I thought this whole setup, the way it was done … that’s enough said on that.”

The NFLPA did a survey of players and then released report cards for each team in February. Johnson was the only owner to be given a grade of F. Johnson took issue with how the survey was conducted.

“How they collected the information, who they collected from was supposed to be according to the agreement we have with the league,” Johnson said. “It’s supposed to be a process where we have representatives and they have representatives, so we know that it’s an honest survey. That was violated, in my opinion. I’m going to leave it at that. But I think there’s a lot of owners who looked at that survey and said this is not fair, it’s not balanced, it’s not every player, it’s not even representative of the players.”

While Johnson was not a fan of the report cards, he did say he wants to make a better effort to have open communication with the Jets players. There were complaints about the food at the Jets’ training center, which seemed to strike a nerve with Johnson.

“The relationship with the players is very, very important,” Johnson said. “We want to make sure the players are involved now. Whatever they want to comment on, have a committee of the players and if they like soufflé this or fish that or stake that, they should tell us. If they’re getting bored with the food or bored with the way the place looks, let me know. I can’t do anything if they don’t tell me. We’re going to have a lot better communication with the players.”

Johnson said the Jets strive to be the best.

“We want to be better every day in every category,” Johnson said. “I want to be No. 1 in everything. All of our people do. We want to be No. 1, like we are in girls’ flag football. We’re No. 1 or No. 2 in the country. That’s where we want to be in everything, including on the field but also off the field in all of our philanthropies. We want to be No. 1.”

Johnson also talked about two quarterbacks — his new one and his old one.

“I think Justin Fields is going to be a total winner for us,” Johnson said of the team’s new No. 1 quarterback. “I’ve been impressed with him since his college days. It was he or Trevor Lawrence. I think he’s going to be really good. He’s going to be put in the right situation with Aaron [Glenn]. … I think it’s going to be very interesting how Justin progresses. He’s going to make a giant leap. He’s a dual threat, which we haven’t had in a while. I don’t know if we’ve ever had this kind of threat. We’ll put him in a good position to win.”

Johnson also commented on the release of Aaron Rodgers for the first time since the team made the move.

“I think both Aaron [Glenn] and the general manager [Darren Mougey] made the decision that it was time to move on,” Johnson said. “The experiment was a good experiment to try to bring him in but it just didn’t work out as you can see. I have a lot of respect for Aaron Rodgers. He is a great player, a Hall of Fame player. I’m sorry it didn’t work out, but we had to make a choice and I think we made the right choice. They made the right choice.”
