Inside Aaron Rodgers' meeting with the Steelers as free-agent QB agonizes over his NFL future

Aaron Rodgers is ‘doing his own evaluation’ about whether the Pittsburgh Steelers is the right fit for him after his recent meeting with Mike Tomlin, according to reports.

Almost three weeks since entering free agency after his New York Jets release, Rodgers, 41, is still yet to either join a new team or announce his retirement as he continues to agonize over his future.

The legendary quarterback has been linked with the Minnesota Vikings and the New York Giants as well as the Steelers in recent months, only for the former pair to recently drop out of the race sign him.

That has left Pittsburgh in pole position to secure a deal, with Rodgers even making the trip to Pennsylvania earlier this month to sit down with Steelers head coach Tomlin and discuss a potential move.

And following that meeting, NFL insider Ian Rapoport says he is now weighing up how good of a fit the team is for him at this stage of his career.

‘It’s been widely reported [the meeting] was really positive,’ Rapoport said on NFL Network’s Good Morning Football.

‘[Mike] talked about the process of getting to know him and digging into their schemes a little bit, talking to the coaches… having all the kind of meetings that you actually don’t really get when someone is a free agent because there’s just not enough time.

‘They’ve got time and Aaron Rodgers is taking his time wanting to make sure that this fit is a perfect one.’

Earlier this week Tomlin lifted the lid on his talks with Rodgers, admitting the pair had a ‘really good day’ when he visited Steelers HQ.

They discussed ‘things that he values as a player and a man and what he might be looking for with his next stop,’ Tomlin said.

‘Specifically, he and I obviously have known of each other for some time, and so it was really good to spend some time together, man, and get to know each other more intimately,’ he added.

‘But it is free agency. It is a process. I have nothing of any more significance to add other than that.’

Tomlin also addressed that there is no ᴅᴇᴀᴅline for Rodgers to decide on his future despite admitting he’d like to land on a team sooner than later.

‘Not to my knowledge,’ he said about a potential ᴅᴇᴀᴅline. ‘I don’t know that we’ve approached it from a ᴅᴇᴀᴅline perspective.

‘Certainly, as I mentioned, you’d like to have settled circumstances. But ᴅᴇᴀᴅlines don’t often bring that to a head.’

And when asked about a potential Plan B should Rodgers either choose to retire or sign with another team, Tomlin insisted the team have not constructed such a strategy.

‘I don’t know if we are identifying anything as Plan A, Plan B or Plan C,’ he revealed.

‘We’re just simply looking at the field of available people, whether it’s free agency or the draft and making decisions and gathering information accordingly.’
