Steelers head coach breaks silence on Aaron Rodgers saga as wait for QB's free agency decision drags on

Mike Tomlin had a vague answer about the Pittsburgh Steeler’s quarterback situation amid links to veteran signal-caller Aaron Rodgers.

After missing his first season with the New York Jets with an Achilles tear and a subpar 5-12 campaign this past year, Rodgers and the Jets parted ways at the campaign’s conclusion.

Since the divorce, the Jets have signed former Steelers quarterback Justin Fields to a two-year, $40million deal. Meanwhile, Russell Wilson left the Steelers to join the New York Giants on a one-year deal worth $10.5m.

With Rodgers’ future undecided, Tomlin claimed the Steelers are still unsure what they’ll do with their quarterback vacancy.

‘We’re still evaluating the acquisition of a guy at the position,’ Tomlin told media members. ‘Whether that’s in free agency and/or the draft, so we’re doing our due diligence.’

While no decision has been made, Tomlin addressed Rodgers’ visit to the team’s facility which reportedly lasted six to seven hours.

‘It’s been reported that he spent a day with us, and it was a really good day,’ Tomlin said.

The coach also addressed that there is no timeline for Rodgers to decide on his future despite admitting he’d like to land on a team sooner than later.

‘Not to my knowledge,’ he said. ‘I don’t know that we’ve approached it from a ᴅᴇᴀᴅline perspective. Certainly, as I mentioned, you’d like to have settled circumstances. But ᴅᴇᴀᴅlines don’t often bring that to a head.’

The coach and quarterback discussed ‘things that he values as a player and a man and what he might be looking for with his next stop,’ Tomlin said.

‘I really just wanted to spend more time just getting to know him better,’ He added about Rodgers.

On March 18, Tom Pelissero reported that former Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe had dinner with Tomlin, Steelers GM Omar Khan, and quarterbacks coach Tom Arth in Tuscaloosa.

The Steelers began their season with an abundance at the position, signing both rising star Justin Fields and bona fide veteran Russell Wilson.

Unfortunately, after losing their sixth postseason game in a row, tied for the longest active streak in the league, the franchise has seen its longest playoff drought since 1972, not having won a playoff game in eight years.
