Potential Tush Push ban gaining ‘momentum’ ahead of pivotal vote: NFL insider

The NFL may finally be approaching an end to the Eagles’ famous — or perhaps infamous — Tush Push.

The Packers fell victim to Philadelphia’s domination in the playoffs, and promptly filed a proposal to ban the Tush Push soon after.

But the Packers aren’t alone — the ban may be gaining some traction.

“I feel like it’s getting more momentum in terms of those opposed to it than I’ve ever heard before,” The Athletic’s Dianna Russini reported Friday. “The sense I get from around the league is that momentum around banning the Tush Push is growing.”

After Philadelphia demolished the Chiefs en route to a 40-22 victory in Super Bowl 2025, the pushback against the Tush Push started getting even louder within the league.

Russini’s report occurred just days after another NFL insider, the Washington Post’s Mark Maske, reported that the ban would face an uphill battle.

For the proposal to pᴀss, it will need 24 of the league’s 32 teams to vote to ban the play.

Maske reported that his sources are “not sure it can get 24,” but Russini indicated that things may be finally trending in the other direction.

The league’s owners meetings will be next week, where the votes on this matter and other potential rule changes will take place.

Back in 2006, the rulebook did not allow any pushing or pulling of a ball carrier, which could be where the league would go with this potential ban.

In February, Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni expressed his frustrations with teams calling for the play’s removal.

“I almost feel a little insulted because we work so hard at that play,” he said. “The fact that it’s a successful play for the Eagles, people want to take that away — I think it’s a little unfair.”

Nobody runs the play quite as well as Philadelphia, and if it were to be banned, the Eagles offense could take quite the blow for short-yardage situations.
