How Russell Wilson signing impacts Giants’ 2025 NFL Draft plans at quarterback

The Giants still appear poised to add another quarterback this year, even after Russell Wilson agreed to join the team on a one-year deak on Tuesday worth up to $21 million, including $10.5 million guaranteed.

That’s according to The Post’s longtime Giants beat reporter Paul Schwartz, who projected Big Blue’s game plan entering the 2025 NFL Draft, where the team holds the No. 3 overall pick.

“What does [Russell Wilson’s signing] mean about the NFL draft? It means that a quarterback is definitely still in play,” Schwartz said.

“When you sign a 36-year-old to a one-year contract, what you mean is you want him to play this year, you have Jameis Winston as a backup, but you want to look ahead and maybe get a quarterback in the draft. The Giants have the No. 3 pick, I would say [Colorado quarterback] Shedeur Sanders is probably or definitely in play if he’s available there.”

The Giants prioritized the quarterback position this offseason following the November release of starter Daniel Jones.

The team pivoted to veterans such as Wilson and Aaron Rodgers after their chase for Matthew Stafford fell short in February when he re-upped with the Rams.

With the team’s bridges secure in Wilson and Winston, who agreed to a two-year, $8 million pact last Friday, the question remains: Who is the Giants’ answer at quarterback for the future?

Miami’s Cam Ward is expected to go No. 1 overall to the тιтans, potentially leaving Sanders, the son of NFL legend Deion Sanders, on the board when the Giants are on the clock after the Browns pick second.

Sanders, 23, is considered one of the more polarizing prospects of this year’s draft class and was at the center of controversy earlier this month following an appearance at the NFL Scouting Combine, with some teams alleging he came off “unprofessional and disinterested.”

Although Sanders knows how to tune out the noise, where the Colorado quarterback will land is a mystery with the 2025 NFL Draft less than a month out.

“People have a lot of questions because he is for sure talented, he has put two programs on his actual back and led them back to national prominence… He is a rock star, but it’s not a slam-dunk, No. 1 overall selection like I think a lot of people think Cam Ward is,” NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport said Monday on “The Pat McAfee Show.”

“Could Shedeur Sanders go No. 2 to Cleveland? Possible. Three to the Giants? Possible. Could I see him going past the top 10 and be the biggest question mark of the draft with every single team on the clock being like, ‘Are they going to take Shedeur?’ I could see that too. It is absolutely fascinating, and a month out now, I have absolutely no idea.”

When Week 1 rolls around in September, Wilson is expected to be the opening day starter with Winston in a backup role, according to Schwartz.

Wilson spent the 2024 season with the Steelers and reached the playoffs.

Pittsburgh, which lost backup Justin Fields to the Jets in free agency, is still in contention for Aaron Rodgers’ services should the future Hall of Famer decide to suit up for 2025.

The Giants went 3-14 last season as they closed out the year with Tommy DeVito and Drew Lock under center.

The 2025 NFL Draft begins on Thursday, April 24.
