Courtroom Falls Silent: Athena Strand Killer Gets Death Sentence

In a Texas courtroom gripped by raw emotion, FedEx driver Tanner Horner was sentenced to death by lethal injection for the brutal murder of 7-year-old Athena Strand — a crime that shocked the nation when the little girl’s naked body was found dumped in a creek on November 30, 2022.

The verdict came after jurors in Fort Worth deliberated for just three hours on Tuesday, May 5, 2026. Horner, who had already confessed to the killing, stood completely unmoved as the judge pronounced he would die “before the hour of sunrise” on a date yet to be set. Not a flicker of remorse crossed his face. No tears. No reaction. The man who had taken an innocent child’s life remained stone-cold as justice was finally served.

What truly silenced the courtroom, however, was the powerful victim impact statement delivered by Athena’s uncle, Elijah Strand. Pointing directly at Horner, he declared with unwavering strength:

“You will be judged. You will face the wrath of God.”

The words hung heavy in the air. Then, in a moment of profound dignity and defiance, Elijah added:

“But I want you to know that you are nothing. You are a footnote in Athena’s story. Her name will forever be remembered. Her name will be forever celebrated.”

Those words — spoken through visible pain yet filled with unbreakable love for his niece — left witnesses shaken and many in the courtroom fighting back tears. The contrast was striking: a remorseless killer staring blankly while a grieving family member spoke with the voice of justice, hope, and enduring memory.

Throughout the trial, jurors had been shown harrowing footage of little Athena in the back of Horner’s truck — images too painful to describe but impossible to forget. The evidence painted a chilling picture of psycH๏τic behavior during the killing, leaving no doubt about the horror the seven-year-old endured.

Yet even in the darkest chapter of this tragedy, Athena’s family refused to let her story be defined by her murderer. Elijah Strand’s statement made it crystal clear: Athena is not a victim who will fade into the past. She is a bright light whose name will continue to shine — remembered, honored, and celebrated by everyone who learned her story and fought for justice in her name.

As Horner was led away to await his fate on death row, the courtroom’s silence spoke volumes. It was the silence of justice delivered. The silence of a family standing tall in unimaginable grief. And the silence of a community that will never forget the precious little girl whose life was stolen far too soon.

Athena Strand’s name will indeed live forever. Her murderer, on the other hand, has been reduced to exactly what her uncle said — nothing more than a footnote in her beautiful, unforgettable story.
