Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022) – A Powerful Tribute to Legacy and Resilience

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022), directed by Ryan Coogler, is a poignant and emotionally charged sequel that pays tribute to the late Chadwick Boseman while continuing the story of Wakanda, its people, and the complex world of superheroes. As the follow-up to the groundbreaking Black Panther (2018), Wakanda Forever explores themes of grief, legacy, and idenтιтy, all while expanding the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) with the introduction of new characters and conflicts. The film strikes a delicate balance between action-packed sequences and heartfelt moments, delivering a powerful narrative that resonates with audiences on a deep emotional level.

Plot Overview

In Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the nation of Wakanda is reeling from the loss of its king, T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman), after the tragic death of the actor in real life. The film opens with the mourning of T’Challa, as his sister, Shuri (Leтιтia Wright), mother, Ramonda (Angela Bᴀssett), and the rest of the nation struggle to cope with the loss of their leader and protector.

The peace and prosperity of Wakanda are soon threatened by a new and powerful adversary: Namor (Tenoch Huerta), the ruler of Talokan, a secret underwater kingdom. Namor, who possesses superhuman strength and the ability to manipulate water, demands that Wakanda join forces with his kingdom to confront the growing threat from outside forces seeking to exploit vibranium, the precious metal that powers both Wakanda and Talokan. The film delves into the power dynamics between these two nations, as well as the tension between preserving their cultures and forging new alliances in a world that increasingly threatens them both.

Shuri, along with Queen Ramonda and Okoye (Danai Gurira), must navigate the challenges of leading a nation in mourning while protecting Wakanda from external threats. As the story unfolds, Shuri discovers the strength within herself and ultimately rises to take on a new mantle, while the film honors T’Challa’s legacy and his vision for a better future.

Themes and Storytelling

At its core, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is a meditation on grief, legacy, and resilience. The film portrays Wakanda’s mourning as a nation coming to terms with the loss of their king and protector, and this loss is felt deeply by every character. The pain of losing T’Challa is evident throughout the film, and it serves as a driving force for the actions of Shuri and the other characters.

Shuri’s journey is particularly impactful, as she grapples with the weight of her brother’s legacy and the immense pressure of taking on a leadership role in the wake of his death. Her evolution from a brilliant scientist to a warrior ready to defend her people reflects the personal growth and self-discovery that comes from loss and hardship. The film explores the themes of stepping into one’s own idenтιтy, especially when faced with impossible circumstances, as Shuri learns to honor her brother’s memory while finding her own path.

Another key theme is the tension between isolationism and global cooperation. Wakanda has always maintained its secrecy, but Wakanda Forever shows the challenges of this approach as the world around them changes. Namor’s threat introduces the idea that isolation may no longer be sustainable, and that Wakanda must reconsider how it engages with the rest of the world. This theme resonates not only within the context of the MCU but also in today’s globalized world, where the balance between protecting cultural heritage and forming alliances is an ever-present challenge.

The introduction of Talokan and its ruler Namor adds a rich layer of complexity to the film. Namor, as a character, is not a traditional villain, but rather a leader with his own motivations and a deep sense of loyalty to his people. His confrontation with Wakanda is driven by the same love and protection for his kingdom, making him a morally ambiguous figure who forces the heroes to reevaluate what it means to protect one’s own culture and legacy.

Performances

The performances in Wakanda Forever are outstanding, with the entire cast delivering powerful portrayals of characters coping with loss, grief, and responsibility. Leтιтia Wright shines as Shuri, bringing a mix of vulnerability, strength, and determination to the character. Her emotional journey from mourning her brother to embracing her role as a leader is the heart of the film, and Wright’s nuanced performance makes Shuri’s growth feel earned and impactful.

Angela Bᴀssett’s portrayal of Queen Ramonda is equally compelling. Ramonda carries the heavy burden of ruling Wakanda while grieving the loss of her son. Bᴀssett’s regal and powerful performance adds depth to the character, showcasing her strength and wisdom as a mother, ruler, and protector.

Tenoch Huerta’s Namor is a standout addition to the MCU, bringing a unique and layered performance to the character. As the ruler of Talokan, Huerta’s portrayal of Namor is intense and emotionally charged, making him one of the MCU’s most complex antiheroes. His presence on screen is commanding, and his motivations are driven by love for his people, making him a compelling and multifaceted character.

The supporting cast, including Danai Gurira as Okoye and Winston Duke as M’Baku, continues to impress with their strong performances. Okoye’s loyalty and bravery, combined with her personal struggles, add emotional depth to the action scenes, while M’Baku’s wit and humor provide moments of levity amidst the film’s heavier themes.

Cinematography and Action Sequences

The cinematography in Wakanda Forever is stunning, with beautiful visuals that capture the grandeur of Wakanda, the underwater world of Talokan, and the intense action sequences. The film’s use of color, particularly the contrast between the bright, vibrant world of Wakanda and the deep, mysterious underwater kingdom of Talokan, is visually striking.

The action sequences are thrilling and well-choreographed, from the high-paced battles between Wakandan warriors and Talokan’s forces to the more intimate moments of emotional confrontation. The film balances spectacle with character-driven storytelling, ensuring that the action never overpowers the emotional stakes of the narrative.

Music and Soundtrack

The soundtrack, once again composed by Ludwig Göransson, is a key component of the film’s emotional and action-packed moments. The score blends traditional African rhythms with sweeping orchestral arrangements, capturing both the cultural richness of Wakanda and the epic scale of the story. The music enhances the film’s themes of legacy and resilience, adding depth to the emotional beats while elevating the action scenes.

Conclusion

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022) is an exceptional sequel that honors the legacy of Chadwick Boseman while continuing the story of Wakanda and its characters. With its emotionally charged narrative, stunning visuals, and complex characters, the film is both a tribute and a bold step forward in the MCU. It explores universal themes of grief, legacy, and idenтιтy, all while delivering an action-packed adventure that leaves a lasting impact. Wakanda Forever is a fitting tribute to the late T’Challa and a testament to the resilience of both the characters and the audience who have supported the franchise.

A Farmer’s Misplaced Hammer Led to the Largest Roman Treasure in Britain

November 16, 1992 was the day which changed Suffolk-resident Eric Lawes’ life in a huge way. What he thought would have been an innocent search for a hammer he had misplaced on his farm in Hoxne Village, Suffolk, England ended up bringing him much more than he had bargained for — namely, uncovering the hiding spot of a long-hidden treasure. Based on the Guardian’s coverage of the story, Eric Lawes had been previously gifted a metal detector upon his retirement as a parting token. He decided to put his retirement gift to good use in order to locate the hammer which he had had some trouble finding. According to a 2018 Smithsonian Magazine article, when the device started recording that there was a strong signal coming from the earth, he knew that he was about to discover something big. As he started digging, it soon became clear to him that he had unearthed a treasure trove.

The Guardian reports that, when Lawes saw that his preliminary digging had yielded a few gold coins and silver spoons, he immediately contacted both the local archaeological society and the police department. Archaeologists came to the property the following day and had the area of earth holding the treasure carefully sectioned-off and removed. Their hope was that at a later stage, in their laboratory, they could examined the items in order to identify both their age and how they were stored.

When all was said and done, close to 60 pounds of items made from silver and gold were found on the site. These included more than 15,000 Roman coins, 200 gold objects, and several silver spoons. For archaeologists, this find — which later became labeled as the Hoxne Hoard — was an incredible discovery. AP News reported that archaeologist Judith Plouviez was over-the-moon about the discovery, saying that it was “an incredibly exciting and amazing find.” What’s more, another archaeologist, Rachel Wilkinson, told Smithsonian Magazine that this discovery was “the largest and latest ever found in Britain.”

Ordinarily, archaeologists would use radiocarbon dating as a means of identifying the age of ancient relics. However, they couldn’t locate any suitable material from the haul. Consequently, they determined the age by examining writing on the coins, as well as the ruler carved into them, estimating that the treasure was probably buried in either 408 or 409 AD.

Roman-era archaeologist Peter Guest told Smithsonian Magazine that “if you look at them a little more carefully, then they should be dated to the period after the separation of Britain from the Roman Empire.” He offers as part of his evidence the fact that almost all of the coins found in the Hoxne Hoard were clipped – in other words, small chunks of their edges had been taken off. These clippings would have been used to create coins which were similar to the Roman coins of that era.

Guest has a logical reason for this, arguing that “The Roman Empire wasn’t supplying Britain with new gold and silver coins, and in light of that, the population tried to get over this sudden cutoff in the supply of their precious metals by making the existing supplies go further.”

Archaeologists also believe that the treasure belonged to a Romano-British family. During that time, considering that there was so much societal discord and upheaval, it was common for Romans who had settled in Britain to bury their most prized possessions.

That said, one archaeologist is of the belief that the hoard had a lot of sentimental value for the Romano-British family to whom it is believed to have belonged. In her book The Hoxne Late Roman Treasure: Gold Jewellery and Silver Plate, Catherine Johns claims that the manner in which the treasure was kept supported this claim. Some of the items which were recovered had been packaged in small, wooden boxes which were lined with leather. What’s more, pieces of wood, locks, and nails, among other things, surrounded the gold and silver pieces. This leads Catherine to assert that the package was carefully buried and not simply chucked away in a rush.

Interestingly enough, the items unearthed might shed some light on the identity of the family who owned them. They cite a gold bracelet bearing the inscription “UTERE FELIX DOMINA IULIANE,” which roughly translates to “use this happily Lady Juliane”. A second name “Aurelius Ursicinus” has also been discovered. This has consequently led some to believe that Juliane and Aurelius were the couple and the original owners of the treasure. That said, that has yet to be confirmed.

All in all, the discovery was a real treasure for archaeologists, and by extension, for Lawes. According to Smithsonian Magazine, in recognition of his discovery and willingness to contact authorities, the British government rewarded him with over £1.7 million, an amount which he shared with the farmer whose land was dug out in order to get the treasure. Funnily enough, apart from the treasure, Lawes also found his lost hammer — which now resides in the British Museum.
