Aaron Rodgers visiting Steelers as free agency saga takes new twist

Aaron Rodgers has gone from the beaches of Malibu to the Steel City.

The ex-Jets quarterback is visiting the Steelers’ facility on Friday and is expected to meet with their coaching staff and personnel as his free agency waiting game continues, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter added Friday “no deal at this time is close,” citing a source.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette also noted: “A commitment from Rodgers may not come today, if at all, and he is just visiting with team owner Art Rooney II, coach Mike Tomlin and general manager Omar Khan.”

The Steelers and the equally quarterback-needy Giants have heavily pursued Rodgers, 41, this offseason following his release from the Jets.

He was sidelined for much of his first season in New York after suffering a year-ending Achilles injury just four plays into the team’s September 2023 opener.

Through 17 games last year, Rodgers threw for 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

The Jets finished the year at 5-12 and missed the playoffs. They have since signed former Steelers quarterback Justin Fields to a two-year, $40 million deal.

The Giants are still without a quarterback and await word from Rodgers, who has taken his time in making a decision.

Over the past few weeks, Big Blue has hosted Jameis Winston, Joe Flacco and Russell Wilson — last year’s Steelers QB — for visits. None have signed.

The Giants also own the No. 3 pick in next month’s draft and could look toward a quarterback such as Miami’s Cam Ward or Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders.

The Vikings — a destination Rodgers reportedly preferred — took their names out of the running this week by indicating they’re moving forward with quarterback J.J. McCarthy, the team’s 2024 first-round pick.

McCarthy missed his rookie season while recouping from knee surgery, paving the way for a Sam Darnold resurgence.

Prior to Friday’s news, Rodgers had been spending time on the West Coast as he pondered his next move.
