Mekhi Becton signing $20 million deal with Chargers after breakout Eagles tenure

Mekhi Becton signing $20 million deal with Chargers after breakout Eagles tenure

After a breakout season, Mekhi Becton has yet another new team.

The ex-Jets bust, who enjoyed a career renaissance with the Eagles last year, is signing a two-year deal worth $20 million with the Chargers, according to NFL Network.

He figures to be a major addition to the team’s offensive line as protection for star quarterback Justin Herbert.

The 6-foot-7 Becton, listed last year at 363 pounds, spent four disappointing years with the Jets, who drafted him with the No. 11-overall pick in 2020.

He struggled to live up to expectations, and his Jets tenure was marred by two separate knee injuries.

They opted not to bring him back when his contract expired last offseason, and he subsequently signed a one-year deal with the Eagles.

That’s where Becton shifted from tackle, where he had played in both college and with the Jets, to guard, and enjoyed success.

He started 15 games in the regular season and all four postseason games, playing an integral role in the Eagles winning Super Bowl 2025.

Becton, still just 25 years old, received a 70.7 overall grade last year from Pro Football Focus — 20th among all guards in the NFL.

“There were definitely dark days, for sure,” Becton told The Post’s Mark Cannizzaro about his time with the Jets after winning the Super Bowl. “I was in those dark days for a good little minute. It just feels good to actually cry tears to joy.

“I’m one of those guys that’s going to work no matter what. I’m just going to keep my head down no matter what anybody says. I just work. Good things come to people who do good things. I’ve put the work in, and now I’m being rewarded for it.”

The Eagles have lost a few major contributors from last year’s teams, including Josh Sweat, Milton Williams and C.J. Gardner-Johnson along with Becton and others.
