Aaron Rodgers free agency saga takes huge twist with quarterback waiting on chosen NFL team to make decision

Aaron Rodgers is still waiting to hear back from the Minnesota Vikings as the team weighs up whether to sign him or not, according to reports.

The veteran quarterback, who officially entered free agency on Wednesday after being released by the New York Jets, has emerged as a potential option for the Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Giants as well as the Vikings this offseason.

Earlier in the week ESPN’s Adam Schefter brutally hit out at Rodgers amid his delay in selecting a new team, urging him to hurry up and decide where he wants to go next.

Yet in a huge twist, The Athletic’s Dianna Russini claims he is actually waiting on the Vikings to make up their mind about what they want to do at quarterback.

It is believed Rodgers has identified Minnesota as his preferred landing spot this offseason, but the team is still undecided about signing him.

‘The Vikings are having discussions about what they want to do at quarterback and if they want Rodgers,’ Russini wrote on X Friday afternoon. ‘Rodgers is giving them time and waiting to hear from Minnesota.

Minnesota is on the hunt for a new starting quarterback after releasing Sam Darnold, who has since put pen to paper on a $100.5million deal with the Seattle Seahawks.

Former college standout JJ McCarthy is still in their ranks after being selected with the 10th overall pick at the 2024 NFL Draft, but it is unclear whether Kevin O’Connell believes the 22-year-old is ready to become a starter next season.

Adding Rodgers to the quarterback stable on a short-term basis could aid McCarthy’s development and provide the perfect stop-gap option until the youngster is prepared to take on the role in 2026.

However, the 41-year-old didn’t exactly impress in his last two seasons with the Jets, where he missed virtually the entire of the 2023 season after tearing his Achilles tendon just four plays into his debut.

Then last year, with full health, he could only manage a 5-12 record. A new regime atop the Jets made the choice to axe the ageing gunslinger in favor of a re-build on offense.

Even if the Vikings do go ahead with a move for Rodgers, there’s no indication he’ll step into the starting role. Minnesota was expected to give the starting job to McCarthy last season before turning to Darnold when the rookie went down with a season-ending injury in the pre-season.
