Damning report lifts lid on Myles Garrett's poor discipline... and reason record-breaking contract may be mistake for Browns

While Myles Garrett recently agreed to a mᴀssive four-year, $160million deal to remain with the Browns, at least one person who covers the team believes that move was a mistake.

Garrett, 29, is a four-time All-Pro and had demanded to be traded this offseason before U-turning to commit his future to the franchise.

And while the pᴀss-rusher has posted double-digit sacks in seven straight seasons, his discipline was called into question by The Athletic’s Jason Lloyd, who said the star struggled with his time-keeping.

‘It’s well known within the Browns that Garrett is frequently late to the facility. He has skipped mandatory team activities on multiple occasions,’ he wrote in a column.

‘Veterans typically police the locker room on those types of things and create the culture of accountability, but here, it’s the best player breaking the rules. That has to change now.’

Lloyd, whose piece was тιтled ‘Browns should have traded Myles Garrett instead of signing him to historic extension,’ noted that Cleveland has not won anything in the eight years that the defensive end has been on the roster, and cast doubt on the legitimacy of his trade demand.

‘If Garrett truly wanted out of Cleveland, if he really wanted to prioritize winning at this stage of life, those feelings won’t dissipate because of a few extra zeroes on his checks,’ he said.

Ultimately, Garrett was handed the richest contract in league history for a non-quarterback, and is set to make $123.5million in guaranteed money.

He also managed to get a no-trade clause inserted in the deal.

In a statement released in February, Garrett explained his desire to play for his new team and compete for a championship.

‘While I’ve loved calling this city my home, my desire to win and compete on the biggest stages won’t allow me to be complacent,’ he said.

‘The goal was never to go from Cleveland to Canton, it has always been to compete for and win a Super Bowl.’

The Browns went 3-14 last year and will select No. 2 overall in this year’s NFL Draft.

By the franchise’s standards, they’ve performed much better in the five seasons that Kevin Stefanski has coached the team, notching two trips to the playoffs and a 40-44 record in that span.
