Spun (2002)

*Spun* (2002), directed by Jonas Åkerlund, is a raw and chaotic portrayal of the methamphetamine subculture. The film follows Ross, played by Jason Schwartzman, as he becomes embroiled in a whirlwind of addiction, crime, and dysfunction after a three-month drug binge. Ross finds himself navigating a gritty and surreal world populated by an eccentric cast of characters, including Brittany Murphy as Nikki, who introduces him to her boyfriend, The Cook, played by Mickey Rourke, a volatile meth supplier.

The ensemble cast also includes John Leguizamo as Spider Mike, a small-time drug dealer constantly at odds with his girlfriend Cookie, portrayed by Mena Suvari. Patrick Fugit, Peter Stormare, and Alexis Arquette round out the cast, adding a mix of dark humor and absurdity to the narrative. The film stands out for its fast-paced, frenetic editing and gritty visual style, reflective of its characters’ fractured, drug-fueled lives.

*Spun* is known for its unflinching and sometimes jarring depiction of addiction, offering a disturbing yet darkly humorous take on the lives of those caught in the drug world. It remains a cult favorite for its unapologetic, no-holds-barred approach to storytelling and its unique visual style.
