Tom Brady's Raiders revolution continues as team releases starter less than a year after handing him $24m deal

The Las Vegas Raiders are beginning their reset under Tom Brady as the team plans to release center Andre James after the new league year begins next week.

On Friday, NFL media reported the Raiders’ plans to make James a post-June 1 cut.

The news comes after James signed a three-year, $24million deal before last year’s free agency. The 27-year-old will count for $5.57million in ᴅᴇᴀᴅ money as a post-June 1 cut but will save the team $3.15m against their cap.

James joined the Raiders in 2019 during the franchise’s last season in Oakland.

In six seasons, James started in 60 of his 89 games for the Raiders. He has seven career penalties, including only three holding infractions.

Having played for Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, New England emerges as a potential landing spot for James.

The six-year veteran’s departure also allows Jackson Powers-Johnson to move to center full-time.

Brady’s influence has already been practiced in hiring Pete Carroll as the Raiders head coach and John Spytek as their GM. The changes came after a 4-13 season for Las Vegas.

The seven-time Super Bowl champion, who had his minority ownership approved late in 2024, immediately grabbed the stirring wheel in Vegas and captained the rebuild.

Brady, who officially became a minority owner in October, was heavily involved in interviewing coaching candidates, according to owner Mark Davis. He also hopes the pair could turn the Raiders’ fate around.

‘We want to build something here and again, that’s been the process and that mindset all along,’ Davis said. ‘Like I said, it got offset or kind of blown up when Jon Gruden was sent away and so we’ve been trying to get it right since then and we’ll see, but I’ve got patience to get it right, and I think we’ve got the people now — again I’ve always felt that — results are what speak to me and that’s what we’ll see.’

The Raiders look to bounce back from a 4-13 season and their third straight playoff miss.
