Ex-Cowboys star Michael Gallup plans on making NFL comeback after surprise retirement

Michael Gallup’s NFL retirement might not be lasting all that long after all.

Gallup, who retired before the 2024 NFL season, plans on making a comeback in the league, NFL Network reported Friday.

Last April, the wide receiver signed with the Raiders on a one-year contract with the intentions of competing for the third wideout spot.

He worked out at OTAs and minicamp, but in July, he decided to ultimately hang up his spikes.

The move shocked the team.

“I didn’t see that one coming at all,” ex-Raiders general manager Tom Telesco told The Athletic last summer. “That just kind of came up out of the blue. When I talked to him, it seemed like he had a pretty clear vision. He’s ready to move on. It’s too bad.”

Gallup, at 29, could be an interesting option as free agency starts next week.

A third-round pick by Dallas in 2018, the Colorado State product burst onto the scene in his second NFL season with a career-high 1,107 yards on 66 catches.

But after tearing his left ACL in the 2021 season, Gallup wasn’t able to match his previous production, finishing with under 450 yards in each of the last three years he played.

Gallup still inked a five-year, $57.5 million contract in 2022 but was ultimately released by Dallas in 2024.

He finished with 266 receptions for 3,744 yards across 86 games with the Cowboys.
