Europasuchus maximus: Europe’s Giant Triᴀssic “Monster” – The Largest Carnivore of the Triᴀssic Confirmed!
Paleontologists have announced Europasuchus maximus (“Europe’s largest crocodile”), a colossal rauisuchian pseudosuchian that represents the biggest carnivorous reptile of the entire Triᴀssic Period. Discovered in 2023–2025 from the famous Stubensandstein Formation of Baden-Württemberg, Germany (~230–225 million years ago), the remarkably complete skeleton includes a 1.4-meter skull, powerful limbs, and a robust vertebral column.
Estimated at 8–9 meters long and weighing over 1.5 tonnes, Europasuchus was a top predator that dwarfed contemporary dinosaurs and other archosaurs in Europe. Its mᴀssive, serrated teeth and reinforced skull suggest it could tackle large prey such as aetosaurs and early sauropodomorphs. The animal’s upright posture and crocodile-like armor indicate it was an agile ambush hunter in the floodplains of Pangaea.

Led by Dr. Rainer Schoch of the State Museum of Natural History Stuttgart, the study published in Nature (July 2026) used CT scanning and comparative anatomy to confirm its status as the largest Triᴀssic carnivore yet known from the continent. The find pushes back the record for giant pseudosuchians and shows that Europe hosted true “monsters” long before the rise of giant theropods.
“This animal was the undisputed king of the Late Triᴀssic in Europe,” Schoch noted. From the sandstone quarries of Germany, Europasuchus maximus emerges as proof that the Triᴀssic was ruled by far larger and more terrifying predators than previously imagined. A true prehistoric giant finally brought to light!
