The 49ers may have moved on from Deebo Samuel, but their salary cap will still take a hit.

San Francisco will take a $31 million ᴅᴇᴀᴅ cap hit, which comes from money that had already been paid to Samuel that hadn’t counted against the team’s salary cap due to the structure of his contract.

Samuel has one year left on his deal and will make $17.5 million in 2025, which will count against the Commanders’ salary cap for the upcoming season.

The 49ers traded Samuel on Saturday in a deal that saw Washington send back a fifth-round pick in this April’s draft.

Commanders defensive tackle Jonathan Allen had been part of the trade talks, but didn’t end up being included in the final deal, ESPN reported.

The move does impact the 49ers’ cap space, dropping it by $16.2 million, according to numbers from OverTheCap.com.

It’s now projected that the 49ers will have $34 million in cap space, which is down from the $50.2 million they had before the trade.

“[There are] some тιԍнтer constraints than we’ve had in the past,” 49ers general manager John Lynch said at the NFL combine last week, according to NBC Sports Bay Area. “You just got to be smart and you have to think about long-term health.”

He continued: “At some point, you have to reset a little bit or at least recalibrate. You can’t just keep pressing the pedal, and I think there’s some good that could come out.”

Samuel had been a second-round pick by the 49ers in 2019 and spent six seasons with San Francisco.

During that time, he has recorded 4,792 receiving yards, 1,143 rushing yards and 43 combined touchdowns.

Samuel is coming off a year in which he had 51 catches for 670 yards and three receiving touchdowns.
