Steelers stance on Russell Wilson vs Justin Fields decision revealed amid quarterback dilemma

The Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterback crossroads between Russell Wilson and Justin Fields appears to be heading to its conclusion, as the team reportedly prefers to keep the younger Fields.

The Steelers creating another problem of benching one of the two is unlikely, meaning the team must cut lose one, which is trending toward being the 36-year-old Wilson after one season.

Wilson started a majority of the Steelers’ games last season, with some thinking he had the advantage by leading Pittsburgh to the postseason.

Pittsburgh losing five straight to end the season, including in the playoffs to division rival Baltimore, has soured his standing with the team, per ESPN.

Steelers owner Art Rooney II said earlier this year that he wanted one of the two to sign a multiple-year deal.

Fields was acquired by the team last March after three seasons starting for the Chicago Bears.

Fields started last season with a 4-2 record as the team’s starter before being replaced by the more-experienced Wilson, a decision that at first put head coach Mike Tomlin under fire.

Wilson took his benching with class and appeared in 10 games for the team last season.

If Fields is retained and Wilson is let go, the market for the former Super Bowl winner should make him a starter elsewhere.

The Jets, Giants, Colts, and Raiders are all looking for a new starting quarterback and do not choose in the top-two selections in the NFL Draft.

This decision will be a huge one for the Steelers, as the AFC loads up with elite quarterbacks. Pittsburgh appears to be going with age over experience.
