Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991) is an action-adventure film directed by Kevin Reynolds, starring Kevin Costner as the legendary English folk hero Robin Hood. The film offers a fresh take on the classic tale of Robin Hood, a nobleman turned outlaw who fights against the corrupt Sheriff of Nottingham (Alan Rickman) to restore justice and help the oppressed.
The story begins with Robin of Locksley escaping from a Turkish prison during the Crusades and returning to England, only to find his father murdered and his lands seized by the tyrannical Sheriff.
With his loyal companion Azeem (Morgan Freeman), Robin takes refuge in Sherwood Forest, where he gathers a band of outlaws, including Little John and Will Scarlet. Together, they wage a guerrilla war against the Sheriff, robbing from the rich to give to the poor and protecting the kingdom from his villainy.
The film blends thrilling action sequences with romance, as Robin also falls in love with the beautiful Maid Marian (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio). With sweeping battles, daring rescues, and moments of humor, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves captures the spirit of adventure and rebellion.
Alan Rickman’s portrayal of the Sheriff of Nottingham is widely regarded as one of the film’s highlights, with his performance adding a sinister yet comedic edge to the villain. The movie also features the hit song β€œ(Everything I Do) I Do It for You” by Bryan Adams, which became a global chart-topping success.
Though the film received mixed reviews from critics, it was a box office hit and remains a beloved interpretation of the Robin Hood legend, with a blend of action, romance, and heroism that appeals to fans of the classic story.
