The story follows Alex Forbes (Eddie Redmayne), a wealthy and intelligent boarding school student accused of murdering his roommate, Nigel Colbie (Tom Sturridge). Forensic psychologist Sally Rowe (Toni Collette) is brought in to ᴀssess Alex’s mental state and uncover the truth behind the killing. Initially, Alex is cold and dismissive, claiming that Nigel manipulated him into a twisted psychological game.



Through a series of flashbacks, the film reveals Nigel’s eerie fascination with death, history, and secret societies. He draws Alex into his dark world, exploring medieval rituals and engaging in mind games that blur the lines between reality and delusion. As Sally digs deeper, she realizes that the case is far more complex than a simple murder—there are layers of influence, control, and hidden motives at play.
