Pittsburgh Steelers brutally axe NFL veteran Preston Smith after just two months

Preston Smith has been released by the Steelers – just two months after the NFL veteran arrived in Pittsburgh.

Mike Tomlin’s team signed the linebacker from the Green Bay Packers ahead of the NFL trade ᴅᴇᴀᴅline back in November.

The 32-year-old, who has spent a decade in the NFL, played eight games for the Steelers as they reached the playoffs.

But the outside linebacker has now been axed by Pittsburgh in a move that saves the team more than $13million in cap space for 2025.

Smith amᴀssed two sacks, one fumble recovery and 13 combined tackles in his eight games for the Steelers.

But he missed two of the team’s final three games of the season, including their Wild Card playoff loss to the Baltimore Ravens.  Preston Smith has been released by the Steelers - just two months after arriving in Pittsburgh

The 32-year-old, now a free agent, was selected by the Commanders in the second round of the 2015 draft.

On Friday, Buffalo Bills offensive lineman Tommy Doyle was forced to retire from the NFL on medical grounds.

Doyle, 26, was a fifth-round draft pick back in 2021 but only managed to play in 12 games for the Bills in his short career.

He tore his ACL against the Miami Dolphins in Week 3 of the 2022 season before then suffering a severe leg injury during pre-season in 2023.

The leg injury has left Doyle with nerve damage and he paid an emotional goodbye to Bills fans on Friday.

He said: ‘At this point, with the calendar and the healing process, it looks as though it’s permanent.

‘I’m just unable to play football at a high level, and it’s time. When you know you know.’
