Aaron Rodgers’ retirement verdict revealed after New York Jets axed the quarterback, 41

Aaron Rodgers has played his last snap for the Jets – but he does wish to play somewhere else in 2025.

Rodgers and the Jets’ underwhelming marriage was officially ended on Thursday after two seasons, as the team announced its intention to ‘move in a different direction.’

But while the 41-year-old is coming off a season in which his yards-per-attempt (6.7) mark was the joint-lowest of his career, he’s not ready to stop playing just yet, as NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Thursday.

While Rodgers won’t be released until June 1, he can begin talking to other teams now.

However, Rapoport expressed doubt that Rodgers would want to be a ‘bridge’ quarterback for a team unlikely to make the playoffs.

‘If it were up to him, with a perfect spot, he wants to play,’ Rapoport added.

The reporter specifically mentioned the тιтans, Raiders, Giants and Browns as quarterback-needy teams that could wind up as landing spots – though those teams went a combined 13-55 last year and it remains to be seen if any of those situations would appeal to the pᴀsser.

Ultimately, Rodgers’ time in New York did not go to plan, as he tore his Achilles on the first series of the season in 2023 before the team went just 5-12 last year.

The Jets sent a 2023 first-round pick, a 2023 second-round pick, a 2023 sixth-round pick and a 2024 second-round pick to the Packers for Rodgers, who ultimately played just 18 games for Gang Green.

By cutting him after June 1, the Jets will save $9.5million in cap space and take on $14million in ᴅᴇᴀᴅ cap for 2025.

That figure will increase to $35million in 2026 (Rodgers signed a three-year, $125million deal with the team in 2023).

In a joint statement from head coach Aaron Glenn and GM Darren Mougey, the Jets formally announced on Thursday that they were parting ways with Rodgers.

‘Last week we met with Aaron and shared that our intention was to move in a different direction at quarterback,’ said HC Aaron Glenn and GM Darren Mougey in a statement released by the team.

‘It was important to have this discussion now to provide clarity and enable each of us the proper time to plan for our respective futures. We want to thank him for the leadership, pᴀssion, and dedication he brought to the organization and wish him success moving forward.’

The Athletic’s Diana Russini reported that the Jets asked Rodgers to stop his weekly appearances on the Pat McAfee show if he were to continue playing on the Jets, though a team source later told DailyMail.com that was false.
