Caught on Camera: Felon Sentenced to Five Years in Prison for Shocking Dog Abuse in Texas

A Texas man with a prior felony conviction has been sentenced to prison after being caught on surveillance video abusing a dog in a case that sparked widespread public outrage. Thomas Joshua Reynolds, 24, was sentenced Monday to five years in prison after pleading guilty to multiple charges of animal cruelty and unlawfully possessing a firearm.
The case gained significant attention last year after the Lacy Lakeview Police Department shared disturbing video footage on social media, asking the public for help identifying the man seen mistreating a dog. The video, captured by a surveillance camera at a local business, showed Reynolds yanking the dog’s leash, lifting him off the ground, striking him, and throwing him to the ground. According to the indictment, Reynolds also failed to provide the animal with adequate care, including necessary veterinary treatment.
Reynolds, who had previously been convicted of possession of heroin in 2023, pleaded guilty to two felony counts of cruelty to non-livestock animals and one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm. He was sentenced to five years in prison on the felony charges. On an additional misdemeanor cruelty charge, he received 365 days in county jail. Judge Thomas West of the 19th State District Court accepted the plea agreement reached with the McLennan County District Attorney’s Office.
The dog at the center of the case, named Chase, has since been given a second chance at life. After being removed from Reynolds’ care, Chase was adopted by Lacy Lakeview police officer Nathan Rodriguez. The department took custody of the dog following the investigation, ensuring he would no longer be subjected to abuse.
The sentencing brings a measure of justice in a case that deeply affected the local community and animal lovers across the state. Many were horrified by the footage, which showed the helpless animal being violently mistreated in a public area. The public’s quick response to the police department’s social media post helped lead to Reynolds’ identification and arrest.
Animal cruelty cases, particularly those involving clear video evidence, often generate strong public reactions. Advocates and community members have emphasized the importance of holding offenders accountable, especially those who already have criminal records. Reynolds’ prior felony conviction made his possession of a firearm a separate criminal offense, adding to the severity of the charges he faced.
For Chase, the outcome has been positive. He is now safe and living with a police officer who has given him a loving home. The case serves as a reminder of the critical role that both law enforcement and the public play in protecting vulnerable animals from abuse.
While the sentencing provides some closure for those who followed the case, it also highlights ongoing concerns about animal welfare and the need for continued vigilance. Reynolds will now serve his time in prison, while Chase gets the care and safety he deserves.
The story of Thomas Joshua Reynolds and the dog he abused has resonated far beyond McLennan County. It stands as a clear example of how video evidence and community involvement can lead to justice, even when the victim cannot speak for themselves. As Reynolds begins his prison sentence, many hope that cases like this will continue to send a strong message: animal abuse will not be tolerated, and those who harm innocent creatures will be held accountable under the law.
