How do Super Bowl squares work?

If you’re new to playing squares — or need a refresher — the box has 10 vertical columns and 10 horizontal rows, which add up to a total of 100 squares.

For this matchup, the Eagles are given the columns and the Chiefs are given the rows. Both the rows and columns have values from 0-9, so any score result can be earned.

Each square is the same price, but has to be purchased separately. After each square is sold, every square is ᴀssigned a number from 0-9.

How are prizes earned?

If you’re in an office pool or playing with friends, there are typically prizes or payouts given. It all depends on the score at the end of each quarter (and overtime, if the game is tied).

The person who has the box that corresponds to the last number of each team’s score wins that quarter.

So if the Chiefs lead 10-3 at halftime, whoever has the Chiefs-0, Eagles-3 square wins.

You can also choose to play where only one winner gets the whole pot based on the final score. So if the Eagles win 41-32, the person with Eagles-1, Chiefs-2 would win the prize.

Some contests go the other way with payouts coming after each score.

What are the best squares to have?

Due to missed extra points or teams going for two, it’s mostly a dart throw. Just think of last year’s 25-22 final, an unusual final score.

But some squares can be more valuable than others.

Squares featuring 0-0, 0-3, 3-0, 7-0, 0-7, and 7-7 have been the best historical combinations throughout all Super Bowls since they involved numbers involved with scores.
