Top candidate removes himself from Jaguars GM search

Buccaneers ᴀssistant general manager Mike Greenberg pulled his name out of the running for the Jaguars general manager job on Tuesday.

The decision, according to Tampa Bay Times Bucs writer Rick Stroud, is not related to any issues about head coach Liam Coen or the Jaguars as an organization.

Rather Greenberg chose to pull out of the running due to loyalty to the Glazer family, which owns the Bucs, Tampa general manager Jason Licht and the 15 years he’s already spent with the organization, Stroud reported.

The Jags did make another request to an organization for an interview request, with NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reporting that Jacksonville put in a request to the 49ers to speak with director of scouting and football operations Josh Williams.

They also requested to interview Rams director of scouting James Gladstone, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The Jaguars had previously requested to speak with Chargers ᴀssistant GM Chad Alexander, Giants ᴀssistant general manager Brandon Brown, Bengals executive Trey Brown and Bears ᴀssistant general manager Ian Cunningham.

News that the Jaguars had requested an interview with Greenberg for the job first came out on Monday, possibly giving Buccaneers fans an ill feeling of deja vu.

Coen ended up in Jacksonville after he secretly met with Jaguars ownership about the coaching job after telling the Bucs that he intended to stay in Tampa.

The dramatic hiring played out with reports surfacing about the secret rendevous and the Jags eventually hiring Coen.

Greenberg began his career in football with the Jets as a football administration intern from 2008-2009 and took a job with the Buccaneers in 2010, starting in a player personnel ᴀssistant role.

The Jaguars made a separate front office hire earlier this week when they named Tony Boselli as the team’s new executive vice president of football operations.
