New Orleans ramps up Super Bowl security with over 100,000 Chiefs and Eagles fans expected a month after terror attack

New Orleans officials are ramping up the city’s security ahead of the Super Bowl, a month after 14 people were killed in a New Year’s Day terror attack.

Thousands of fans will flood into Louisiana next week as the Chiefs and Eagles prepare to face off in Super Bowl LIX.

And according to Fox 8 in New Orleans, extensive security measures are already being put into place as fencing, tens and additional surveillance cameras are being installed near the Superdome.

The outlet added that new steel wedges have been placed at ‘key entry points’ off of Bourbon Street.

NFL Security is leading the safety efforts with the help of local officials.

Super Bowl LIX, on February 9, will come less than two months after New Orleans was rocked by a terror attack on Bourbon Street. Shamsud-Din Jabbar rammed his truck into people celebrating New Year’s Eve.

Fox 8 reported that the city is considering a proposal from an outside firm which would see Bourbon Street become a pedestrian-only zone.

Nonetheless,, New Orleans Police Department Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick said that security planning for the Super Bowl began 18 months ago.

‘We will have multiple tactical teams, multiple undercover officers. We will spread them out in the Dome, the exterior of the Dome, the French Quarter, and the CBD,’ Hans Ganthier, NOPD’s Chief Deputy Superintendent of the Field Operations Bureau, added.

New Orleans police spokesperson Barry Fletcher has also issued a warning about climbing street poles – as Philly fans have been known to do – in the French quarter.

‘Regarding climbing street light poles, that is not only illegal [trespᴀssing] but is unsafe as many of the street light poles in the French Quarter are quite old,’ Fletcher said in an email to the Philadelphia Inquirer. ‘Climbing on them risks toppling the light pole.’

The warning from Fletcher comes as after 18-year-old in Philadelphia died after falling from a street pole in the wake of the Eagles’ NFC Championship victory on Sunday.

One French Quarter H๏τel is famous for greasing a nearby pole on Bourbon Street, but it remains unclear if the rest of the city’s light poles will also be coated in Vaseline or other lubricants.

An estimated 100,000 visitors are expected to pack into the city for the Super Bowl.
