Jerry Jones reveals what was really said in conversations with Deion Sanders over Cowboys job

Jerry Jones reveals what was really said in conversations with Deion Sanders over Cowboys job

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones lifted the lid on his meeting with Deion Sanders amid their search for the next head coach in Dallas.

After parting ways with Mike McCarthy, Jones interviewed the Pro Football Hall of Famer and current Colorado Buffaloes coach for the vacancy which sent sports media into a frenzy.

The position was ultimately filled by newly hired coach Brian Scottenheimer, who was promoted from his offensive coordinator position with the team.

In Scottenheimer’s introductory press conference, Jones seemed to downplay the meeting with Sanders as a ‘conversation’ between longtime friends.

‘Just a conversation about the team, and about where he is, and his boys, conversation with his boys, that type of conversation. I’ve said I’ve talked to a lot of coaches, and Deion has a job.’

Shortly after McCarthy’s exit, Jones and Sanders reportedly spoke with the former Cowboys star billed as a ‘top candidate’ for the position.

After coaching Jackson State from 2020-2022, Sanders signed a five-year, $29.5million deal to coach the Buffaloes.

Despite suffering a 4-8 season in his first year, Sanders brought plenty of eyes to the team. This past season the Buffaloes finished with a 9-4 record with Shedeur Sanders and Heisman winner Travis Hunter leading the stampede.

Dallas saw the postseason in each of the previous seasons under McCarthy. They also went 12-5 three years in a row but only had one playoff win during his tenure.

With their last тιтle coming in 1995, team owner Jerry Jones has been adamant about the need for a championship. After what he called a ‘joint review,’ the Cowboys decided it was time to move on from McCarthy.

‘Over the past week, Mike and I had the opportunity to conduct a joint review of all aspects of the past season, our players and staff, and also spent considerable time discussing the road forward for the team,’ Jones said.

‘Prior to reaching the point of contract negotiations, though, it became mutually clear that it would be better for each of us to head in a different direction.’

The position was also linked to former Cowboys тιԍнт end Jason Witten before Scottenheimer was selected to fill the vacancy.
