Liam Coen’s first impression as Jacksonville Jaguars head coach, after bolting from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, was not without fault, as NFL fans ripped him for his ‘DUVAL’ attempt.
Jacksonville is the biggest city in Duval County, Florida, with Jaguars fans using the name of its county as its signature chant.
The pronunciation of ‘Duval’ is typically long, loud, confident, and drawn out. In Coen’s case, fans felt it with a whimper.
Plenty of work is needed to bring the Jaguars back to playoff contention. While an important word’s pronunciation is not exactly a required skill in Jacksonville, Coen needs to improve his technique to make amends with the fan base.
Across his entire coaching career, which dates back to 2010, Coen has not stayed in a job more than two seasons.
If NFL fans had their way based on the press conference’s cringeworthy moment, that trend will hold true and end with a pink slip.

‘This is the worst,’ one Jaguars fan said.
‘Negative aura,’ another football fan added.
‘Yeah they’re going 5-12,’ one more NFL fan said, which would be one win better than the Jaguars finished this season.
‘Jags front office: ya know guys maybe we should go with [Saleh],’ another person concluded, mentioning former New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh, who is now the 49ers defensive coordinator.
A collection of social-media messages bashing Liam Coen’s attempt at saying ‘DUVAL’
Coen has two seasons of NFL coordinator experience under his belt, with a 2022 stay with the Los Angeles Rams bookended by jumps back to the college game at Kentucky.
This will be Coen’s seventh different job тιтle in as many seasons, with him hoping for more stability in his daily tasks by his defection from one Floridian NFL team to another.
Coen’s cheeky attempt at seeming knowledgeable to the local fan base has backfired.
Now all he has to do is get Jacksonville back to its winning ways and learn how to properly pronounce an important part of the team’s culture.
