Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford available for shock trade after playoff loss

Los Angeles Rams General Manager Les Snead has teased the possibility of trading quarterback Matthew Stafford.

Stafford led Sean McVay’s side to the divisional round of the playoffs, where they were beaten by the Philadelphia Eagles in a tense snow game.

On Friday, however, Snead was asked about the quarterback’s future in Los Angeles. Rather than shut down the possibility of Stafford leaving during the offseason, Snead  suggested the 36-year-old could head elsewhere.

Stafford – who is pondering retirement – is reportedly due a $4m bonus in mid-March, meaning the quarterback would need to be traded quickly.

‘You don’t want those issues dragging out throughout the offseason and kind of being a theme going into the season,’ Snead said.

‘On trades, that’s one thing, it will take someone calling or us reaching out—that’s the things that are going to be determined down the road here.’

Los Angeles and Stafford faced a similar scenario last offseason. They eventually agreed to an adjusted contract on the day Rams players reported to training camp.

‘We don’t want to have that go on again,’ McVay said. ‘I don’t think that’s good for anybody. I think sooner than later, being able to get that clarity. Understanding clear, open and honest communication.

‘I think there’s a lot of love coming from our part. I think there’s a lot of appreciation coming from his part as well. And I think a lot sooner than later is an ideal scenario.’

Stafford is a former No 1 overall pick who has been with the Rams since 2021 and led Los Angeles to victory at Super Bowl LVI.

Following the loss to the Eagles last week, however, the 36-year-old did not rule out retirement from the NFL.

Stafford said he ‘sure feels like’ he is able to play ‘good football’. But the quarterback revealed he would take some time before deciding his next move.

‘As far as my future goes, it’s 30 minutes after the last game so I’ll take some time to think about it,’ he said. ‘But I feel like I was playing some pretty good ball.’
