Dallas Cowboys fans were left furious by the team’s new head coach hire – and the organization could face more backlash as it closes in on a new defensive coordinator.
The Cowboys announced on Friday night that they were promoting offensive coordinator Brian ScH๏τtenheimer to head coach, with some fans saying afterwards that they’d ‘boycott’ the team as a result. The 51-year-old has 25 years of NFL coaching experience, but none as a head coach.
According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, ScH๏τtenheimer is considering ex-Bears head coach Matt Eberflus for Dallas’ vacant defensive coordinator job, with Eberflus considered a ‘prime candidate’ for the role.
Eberflus, who was a Dallas ᴀssistant from 2011-17, oversaw the league’s worst scoring defense in 2022 (his first year with the Bears), while the team improved to 13th the year after. He finished his Chicago tenure 14-32, with his clock management issues this season coming under the microscope before he was fired in November.
And some fans bashed the proposed move after Fowler’s report.
‘This is pathetic as f***,’ one wrote on X.

Owner Jerry Jones has now hired nine head coaches since he bought the team in 1989
‘This is parody, right?,’ another asked.
‘didn’t think it could get worse,’ a third said.
However, others defended Eberflus’ qualifications for the defensive coordinator role, even if his time as a head coach didn’t work out.
‘Flus is a good defensive coordinator. I’ll stand by that. He’s just NOT a head coach,’ one wrote.
‘Ok we don’t have to pretend this isn’t good, even if it is once again a friend of the program,’ another added.

Eberflus previously served as the linebackers’ coach and pᴀssing game coordinator for the Cowboys, before spending four years with the Colts as their defensive coordinator.
He led Indianapolis to a top-ten scoring defense in all but one of his four seasons there.
Dallas’ decision to hire ScH๏τtenheimer, and potentially Eberflus, comes after the team parted ways with Mike McCarthy after five seasons.
McCarthy’s contract expired after this season, in which Dallas finished 7-10, and owner and president Jerry Jones said it became ‘mutually clear’ that the two parties should separate.
ScH๏τtenheimer is the ninth coach hired by Jones since he bought the team in 1989 and fired the only coach the Cowboys had for their first 29 seasons, Pro Football Hall of Famer Tom Landry.
