Tom Brady gives his verdict on controversial Patrick Mahomes refereeing calls against Texans

Tom Brady has sided with those who believe Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was given an unfair advantage during the Divisional playoff against the Houston Texans.

Brady spoke out about the penalties called against the Texans who attempted to be physical with Mahomes, only for them to be shocked when being hit with a penalty.

Brady, who was on the receiving end of some of the same criticism as a player in the middle of the Patriots dynasty, knows everything involved with the Chiefs is under a microscope due to their on-field prowess.

The now-Fox Sports analyst and minority owner of the Las Vegas Raiders even pitched a rule change to go along with his view.

‘When quarterbacks become running backs, and they’re out of the pocket, they should lose their protection,’ Brady said Thursday on ‘The Herd’.

‘We’re trying to protect the quarterbacks, but coaches are calling more quarterback runs than ever in the history of the game. So, who is protecting the quarterback? We’re trying to say the referees should do it?’

Three controversial plays involving Mahomes have been the lasting image from the Chiefs victory last Saturday.

One resulted in a penalty to Will Anderson Jr. after he hit Mahomes in the upper chest and face mask.

Another penalty was given to Henry To’o To’o after he and a Houston teammate hit Mahomes while he slid with little time to avoid contact.

Mahomes also appeared to embellish contact on a fourth-quarter play as well, without any of the yellow laundry hitting the turf.

‘The reality for me is offensive players need to protect themselves. If they’re running full speed and the defender’s coming up – the only way to turn the ball over is to create force,’ Brady said. ‘You’re not going to blow on the football and knock its way out of a running back’s hands or a quarterback’s hands.’

‘You’ve gotta go there with force and knock it out. You’re trying to create turnovers. You’re trying to disrupt the pᴀsser. You’re trying to dislodge the ball. The only way to do that is with force. There needs to be an aggressiveness to doing that.’

Brady will not be at the Chiefs AFC Championship against the Buffalo Bills, as he’ll be calling the other game with a Super Bowl bid on the line between the Commanders and Eagles.

It remains to be seen whether he’ll be as critical on the air about any incident involving Jayden Daniels or Jalen Hurts.

‘If you don’t wanna get hit, you can go down, you can run out of bounds. But you can’t, in essence, have the defensive player come in at half speed, and then you run over the defensive player because he’s afraid of getting a penalty,’ Brady said.

‘It’s a disservice to the game. It’s something that I’d hope people really address. Not that anyone’s trying to take advantage of the rules, but they’ve gone to a point where it does impact the quality of the game.’
