86-year-old Tom Moore is coming back for 49th NFL season to coach with Buccaneers

Tom Moore will be back on an NFL sideline next season.

Moore, 86, will coach for his 49th season in the NFL, continuing his role with the Buccaneers as an offensive consultant, the Tampa Bay Times’ Rick Stroud reported Tuesday.

This will mark his sixth season in the role.

Moore has been coaching in the NFL since 1977, with stops in Pittsburgh, Minnesota, Detroit, New Orleans, Indianapolis, New York (Jets), Tennessee, Arizona and Tampa Bay.

The players that Moore has worked with include: Terry Bradshaw, Barry Sanders, Peyton Manning and Tom Brady.

He’s been a part of four Super Bowl-winning teams, winning two with the Steelers and one each with the Colts and Buccaneers.

And he has garnered respect throughout the NFL for his insight into the game and his “Moore-isms” as they were described in an NFL Films special.

One of those featured in the show was: “Its a simple game, but it just ain’t easy.”

“It’s simple, block this guy. That’s simple, but it’s not easy so you have to be taught technique and fundamentals,” Moore explained. “When I was in Pittsburgh, we spent the first day of training camp teaching everybody on the team how to block and tackle by the numbers, every year.”

“I heard of coach Moore and I heard of the Moore-isms prior to ever meeting him. And I was like this guy has to be a made-up character, there’s no way he’s still doing this,” Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield recalled in the NFL Films special. “And I get here and he’s still doing it and he absolutely loves it.”

“I just respect him so much,” Mayfield also said.

In addition to nearing the half-century mark for coaching in the NFL, he’s also coached in 49 NFL playoff games during his career.
