Giants hire Jets’ Marquand Manuel as new defensive backs coach

That did not take long.

One week after firing two ᴀssistant coaches on the defensive side of the ball, the Giants made a hiring, bringing in Marquand Manuel as the new defensive backs coach, The Post confirmed.

Manuel knows his way around the New Jersey area. He was the Jets’ safeties coach the past four years. Before that, Manuel was the Eagles’ defensive backs coach in 2020.

He did once serve as a defensive coordinator, for the Falcons in 2017 and 2018.

A former NFL safety for eight seasons with six different teams, Manuel, 45, played in a Super Bowl loss with the Seahawks after the 2005 season and was a defensive ᴀssistant for the Seahawks in a Super Bowl victory after the 2013 season.

The Giants, after a 3-14 season, fired two defensive ᴀssistants, cornerbacks coach and defensive pᴀssing game coordinator Jerome Henderson and safeties coach Mike Treier.

Shane Bowen will return for a second season as the defensive coordinator.

One of Manuel’s main tasks will be getting through to Deonte Banks, the 2023 first-round pick. Banks showed promise as a rookie but his play regressed in 2024 and he exhibited lapses in effort from time to time — lapses that led to Henderson coming out with public criticism of the young cornerback.

With the Jets, Manuel was popular with the players, as was Henderson with the Giants.
