Adam Schefter has warning with Raiders-Ben Johnson momentum growing

The talk of a potential Ben Johnson-Raiders marriage has only grown this week.

But one NFL insider is pumping the breaks on the idea that the two have already put a ring on it.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter joined “The Pat McAfee Show” on Friday, and the conversation shifted to Johnson, the current Lions offensive coordinator, and the Las Vegas head coach opening.

While the Johnson-Raiders rumors have intensified, including a report from Pro Football Talk this week that said Vegas offered the Detroit OC a “mᴀssive” deal, things are far from over, according to Schefter.

The NFL insider even said that he’s not sure why many pundits have counted out one franchise that could use Johnson’s services — the Bears.

Chicago, despite finishing 5-12 this past season, does have the young Caleb Williams rostered under center with some strong skill position players surrounding him.

“I don’t know where he’s going to go, he’s going to have, I think three realistic options,” Schefter said on “PMS.” “Why is everybody ignoring Chicago when it comes to Ben Johnson? Why has that been just dispelled? I don’t get it.”

Schefter did concede that Johnson very well could end up with the Raiders, he’s just not yet convinced it’s a 100 percent certainty, especially since the team is without a bonafide No. 1 quarterback and picking outside the top-five (No. 6) in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Johnson has already interviewed with the Bears, Raiders, Jaguars and Patriots — the last of which already hired Mike Vrabel.

Johnson is thought of as one of the top candidates this cycle.

When asked by reporters this week about what might make a head coaching destination more attractive, Johnson played it close to the vest.

“I’m going to stay focused on the main thing right here and that’s going to be the Washington Commanders right here and now,” Johnson said.
