Jets’ Jeff Ulbrich interviews for Falcons defensive coordinator job

Jeff Ulbrich is keeping his options open.

The Jets interim head coach completed an interview with the Falcons for their vacant defensive coordinator position on Wednesday.

Ulbrich, 47, has plenty of connections with the Falcons, a team with which he held various defensive coaching positions from 2015-20.

Notably, Ulbrich was promoted to defensive coordinator in the middle of the 2020 season under then-interim head coach Raheem Morris.

Morris later took over the reins as the team’s head coach for good this year after Arthur Smith was fired following the 2023 season.

Ulbrich was the Jets’ defensive coordinator from 2021-24 until he became the interim head coach for the final 12 games of this season after Robert Saleh was fired in October.

The interview for the defensive coordinator position comes less than a week after Atlanta underwent a major shakeup on its defensive staff, firing coordinator Jimmy Lake and line coach Jay Rodgers.

“After a thorough evaluation of the season, and with careful consideration for our team’s future, we deemed these moves necessary,” Morris said in a release about the decisions on Saturday. “These decisions are never easy from the human side of things and we wish Jimmy, Jay and their families the best.”

Atlanta’s defense finished 23rd in the league in both points (24.9) and yards (345.2) allowed yards per game.

Ulbrich, whose defense finished in the top five in yards allowed in each of the last three seasons, interviewed for the Jets head coaching gig earlier this week.
