Ben Johnson breaks his silence on NFL head coach interviews

Ben Johnson quickly brushed off questions about his recent interviews for head coaching openings across the NFL.

With the Lions’ recent success, including an NFC тιтle game appearance last year and a 15-2 record this past season, the offensive coordinator under Dan Campbell has been in demand across the NFL job market.

During the Lions’ bye week, Johnson virtually interviewed with the Chicago Bears, Las Vegas Raiders, New England Patriots, and Jacksonville Jaguars. Apart from the Patriots hiring Mike Vrabel, the other vacancies remain up for grabs.

When asked about his interviews ahead of the Lions’ divisional playoff game against the Washington Commanders, Johnson kept his answer brief.

‘It went great and that’s the end of it,’ Johnson answered.

However, when asked about his colleague Aaron Glenn’s interviews, Johnson raved about the Lions defensive coordinator.

‘He’s more prepared to be a head coach than maybe, anybody I’ve ever met,’ he said of Glenn.

Glenn received interview requests from every head coach opening minus the recently-opened Dallas Cowboys job. Glenn only turned down the Patriots’ request, making way for Vrabel’s hiring.

‘I’ve never felt anything against that organization, it just wasn’t the best situation for me,’ Glenn said of the Patriots opening.

Before this season, Johnson explained how he turned down a second interview to be the head coach at Washington (and the Seattle Seahawks) last year, citing ‘unfinished business’ with Detroit after coming inches away from the Super Bowl.

On Wednesday, he explained how his recent interviews made him a lot more prepared to face the questions he’s fielded during this year’s hiring cycle.

Nonetheless, Johnson remains focused on the task before him, as the Lions gear up to face the Commanders on January 18.

‘I’m going to stay focused on the main thing right here and that’s going to be the Washington Commanders right here and now,’ Johnson said. ‘That’s what we’re about. I told the head coach when we came in, he asked me about how it went this weekend.’

‘The focus right here and now for the players, for the coaching staff, for everybody in this building is about this game this week.’
