Dak Prescott breaks silence on Dallas Cowboys firing Mike McCarthy

Dak Prescott opened up about Mike McCarthy’s departure from the Dallas Cowboys after their season closed with a playoff miss.

Following their 7-10 campaign, the Cowboys were unable to reach a contract agreement ahead of his current deal’s expiration. Ultimately, the parties parted ways after five seasons.

In a text exchange with DLLS reporter Clarence Hill, Prescott gave his thoughts on McCarthy’s exit.

‘Bummed, because we built some things,’ the quarterback shared. ‘But I guess they couldn’t reach an agreement. SMH.’

Prescott described the 61-year-old as a ‘great coach and a hell of a man’ who shouldered the ‘responsibility for our team being in this position.’

Throughout their frustrating and injury-plagued season, Prescott has defended McCarthy publicly as he openly spoke about wanting the team to keep him on board.

The ailments included a season-ending hamstring injury on Prescott in Week 9.

‘Your coach seems like he’s playing on his last contract and [I’m] almost feeling helpless like I can’t help him in this situation, especially a guy you believe in so much and you believe in being your head coach,’ Prescott said after his injury.

‘Control what I can control, help and support Mike to every extent that I can.’

‘I believe in him wholeheartedly,’ he added. ‘I don’t want to necessarily get into the nuts and the screws of it all obviously, but I think he definitely deserves a chance — another contract and a chance to coach this team amongst more influence. ‘On his terms’ may be a good way to say it. But I wholeheartedly believe in him.’

Dallas saw the postseason in each of the previous seasons under McCarthy. They also went 12-5 three years in a row but only had one playoff win during his tenure.

With their last тιтle coming in 1995, team owner Jerry Jones has been adamant about the need for a championship. After what he called a ‘joint review,’ the Cowboys decided it was time to move on from McCarthy.

‘Over the past week, Mike and I had the opportunity to conduct a joint review of all aspects of the past season, our players and staff, and also spent considerable time discussing the road forward for the team,’ Jones said.

‘Prior to reaching the point of contract negotiations, though, it became mutually clear that it would be better for each of us to head in a different direction.’

Colorado coach and former Cowboys star Deion Sanders has been linked to the position alongside former тιԍнт end Jason Witten.
