Super Bowl contender Detroit Lions get major injury boost from David Montgomery going into the playoffs

Super Bowl contender Detroit Lions get major injury boost from David Montgomery going into the playoffs

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell said he expected star running back David Montgomery to be ready to play in the Divisional playoffs.

Montgomery has not played since the Lions’ Week 15 loss to the Bills, when he suffered an MCL injury.

The Divisional round will take place five weeks after Montgomery’s injury date, giving him plenty of time to take the field against the lowest remaining seed in the NFC at Ford field next weekend.

Detroit has the NFC’s only bye as the No 1 seed and has homefield throughout the playoffs. Only a Super Bowl would take place away from Ford Field, with it scheduled for February 9 in New Orleans.

The Lions finished tied for the best record in the NFL despite Montgomery’s injury at 15-2.

Stepping up in Montgomery’s place has been Jahmyr Gibbs, with Detroit possessing one of the NFL’s best backfield duos.

Many have speculated as to how good the Lions would be if they were not one of the most-injured teams in the NFL this season.

In addition to Montgomery going down, star defensive lineman Aidan Hutchinson has missed most of the season.

Both Terrion Arnold and Kevin Zeitler could be back in time for the Divisional playoff as well.

A total of 13 players have been put on injured reserve by the Lions this season, with Montgomery not being one of them despite missing over a month of action.

Now, Detroit has nearly two weeks to get healthy before attempting to win a Divisional playoff game at home for a second year in a row.

The Lions possible opponents for the Divisional round are the Packers, Commanders, Vikings, and the Rams.
