Juаnitа, The Iсe Mаiden: Reveаling the Fаce of а 500-Yeаr-Old Inсa Sаcrifice

Discover the story of Juanita, the Ice Maiden, a 500-year-old Inca sacrificial victim whose remarkably preserved remains have captivated scientists and historians alike. Found near the summit of Ampato, an active volcano in the Andes Mountains, Juanita’s frozen body was unearthed in 1995, revealing incredible insights into the Inca culture.

For years, Juanita has been known by various names – the “Ice Maiden,” Juanita, and the Lady of Ampato. Despite her well-preserved state, little was known about her true idenтιтy. That changed recently when Swedish artist Oscar Nilsson, in collaboration with researchers from the Center for Andean Studies at the University of Warsaw and the Catholic University of Santa María, created a stunning 3D reconstruction of her face.

This groundbreaking reconstruction, unveiled on October 24, 2023, is a highlight of the exhibition тιтled “Capacocha: Following the Inca Gods” at the Andean Sanctuaries Museum in Peru. The exhibition delves into the latest research on Juanita’s life and the Capacocha ritual, a significant Inca practice involving the sacrifice of children to appease the gods.

Visitors to the museum can explore the intricacies of Juanita’s life, her role in the Capacocha ritual, and the fascinating process behind the 3D reconstruction. The exhibition also showcases other Inca mummies discovered along the peaks of the Peruvian Andes, offering a broader understanding of the Inca civilization and its traditions.

Juanita’s story is not just a tale of sacrifice; it’s a window into the past, providing valuable insights into the Inca’s religious practices and their way of life. Her well-preserved body, complete with her original clothing and artifacts, serves as a time capsule, helping us piece together the rich history of the Inca Empire.

Don’t miss this unique opportunity to witness Juanita’s reconstructed face and learn about the significant cultural practices of the Inca civilization. Visit the Andean Sanctuaries Museum and immerse yourself in the story of Juanita, the Ice Maiden – a remarkable journey through time and history.
