Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel suggests Tyreek Hill quit on team with divorce looming

Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel and star wideout Tyreek Hill had differing stories about why the receiver didn’t play in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s 32-20 road loss to the Jets.

McDaniel told reporters that Hill was unavailable right before a drive and that he wasn’t informed of a new injury the All-Pro wideout sustained.

Hill was asked about the matter separately in the locker room and told reporters he was “dealing with a little issue” and that “coach kind of pulled me out” of the game.

“I was informed that he was unavailable right before a drive,” McDaniel said in his postgame press conference. “I was not informed that it was a new injury. And you know, I think at that point in time, my focus was on the players and I didn’t take the time to go and try to figure out more into that. There was guys on the field that were competing, we were trying to win a game, so my focus was there.”

Hill — who also told reporters, “I’m out,” following Miami’s season-ending loss — was asked if he was dealing with a left wrist issue, an injury he played through this season.

“Right — you know so, coach kind of pulled me out,” he said.

Hill seemed to backtrack when asked if McDaniel specifically pulled him out of the game because of his wrist.

“Just one of those issues, man, that like you know, you look up at the scoreboard, Chiefs are down [to the Broncos] and it’s like, OK,” Hill said of Denver’s playoff-clinching win over Kansas City that knocked Miami and Cincinnati out of postseason contention.

Hill caught two pᴀsses for 20 yards before exiting the game in the fourth quarter.

“I’m not going to (put) too much weight on second-hand, postgame disappointment statements,” McDaniel said. “We will see how (the) next couple days progress in convos with him and I.”

Hill, 30, remains under contract for the next two seasons after reworking his deal last year.

Elsewhere on Sunday, Hill stated this is the first time in his NFL career that he’s not in the playoffs.

He began his NFL career in Kansas City, spending six years with the Chiefs before being traded to Miami in 2022.

“I just gotta do what’s best for me and my family,” Hill said. “If that’s here or wherever the case may be, I’m finna open that door for myself. I’m opening the door. I’m out, bro.

“It was great playing here, but at the end of the day, bro, I got to do what’s best for my career. I’m too much of a compeтιтor to be just out there.”

Hill came up 41 yards short of his fifth straight 1,000-yard receiving season.

“It is what it is,” he said.

“Love fin nation blessing yall opened doors for the Hill family forever nothing ,but respect and love,” Hill wrote Sunday on X.
