Mike Kafka’s Giants contract could cause another complicated offseason

Mike Kafka’s future could turn in a lot of different directions.

The Giants ᴀssistant head coach/offensive coordinator revealed Thursday that he is under contract in 2025, which means he can be blocked from interviewing to make a lateral move even though another team might allow him to regain the play-calling responsibilities that he lost to head coach Brian Daboll after the 2023 season.

So, maybe Kafka is back in the same role.

After all, Daboll already said that he wants to retain Kafka.

Then again, Daboll is not a lock to keep his job just yet.

And a new head coach would mean big staff changes.

“I love being here and I love working for Dabes and everybody,” Kafka said. “My only focus really is just on [facing] Philadelphia.”

Kafka has interviewed for six head-coach vacancies over the last two offseasons.

But it can be difficult for non-playing coordinators to get interviews, so it’s possible Kafka’s window is shut for now.

The Giants blocked Kafka from interviewing to be the Seahawks offensive coordinator last offseason after he first was a finalist for their head-coach vacancy ultimately filled by Mike Macdonald.

He was given a new тιтle and a pay bump but lost play-calling duties.

“It’s been great collaboration between the staff — myself, other position coaches, player input,” Kafka said.

DT Dexter Lawrence’s wish didn’t come true.

“I don’t want to be at the Pro Bowl by myself,” Lawrence said on Aug. 2 in a message to motivate teammates.

Well, Lawrence was the only Giant selected again Thursday.

His third straight selection might be his most impressive because his nine-sack season was cut short after 12 games by a dislocated elbow.

WR Malik Nabers and OLB Brian Burns were named Pro Bowl alternates.

WR Darius Slayton was named the winner of the 24th annual George Young-Ernie Accorsi Media Good Guy Award for his professionalism and availability during the 2024 season, as voted by the Giants Chapter of the Professional Football Writers of America.

Slayton collected 15 of a possible 18 first-place votes, with LB Micah McFadden, OT Jermaine Eluemunor and QB Drew Lock all garnering consideration.

McFadden (neck), RT Evan Neal (rib/hip), C John Michael Schmitz (ankle) and DL Armon Watts (knee) did not practice.

Nabers (toe) was added to the injury report as limited.
