The Jets were called for 16 penalties in Sunday’s 40-14 loss to the Bills and they now lead the NFL with 131 accepted penalties.

But Jets linebacker Jamien Sherwood said the Jets are not getting the benefit of the doubt and that is leading to bad calls from the officials.

“That’s just one of the downfalls of being on the Jets,” Sherwood said. “You know, the refs are never going to side with us. So it’s like don’t give them an opportunity to throw a flag or anything. Again, you just got to be smart and that goes along with being at your best when your best is required.”

Sherwood pointed out that being an NFL official is not a full-time job and said that affects their ability to make the calls.

“At the end of the day, you know, referees don’t referee Monday through Sunday,” Sherwood said. “You know, they only referee on Sunday throughout the week. You know, they most likely have a different job. So again, you can’t depend on what they call.”

The Jets were called for five personal fouls in Sunday’s loss.

Sherwood said he disagreed with several of those calls as well as some pᴀss interference penalties.

“This season, calls haven’t gone our way,” he said. “And again, it’s just you can’t depend on the refs to make the best call, you know what I’m saying? They can only see so much. And what they do see is just something they see once a week. They’re not studying it every week, I feel like. So again, it’s just all about being smart in those moments.”

After Sunday’s loss to the Bills, Jets cornerback Sauce Gardner raised some eyebrows when he said that “some people might be checked out.”

On Monday, interim coach Jeff Ulbrich said he did not agree with Gardner.

“I took a real hard look at the tape, in all three phases, and I was looking for that, in moments like this, I think it’s a great opportunity to really evaluate the character of a man, and the truth is I couldn’t find it,” Ulbrich said. “I couldn’t find a lack of effort and strain, I couldn’t at all. Did we lack execution? Absolutely. Did we miss opportunities, and did we not play to the standard of this organization? Absolutely did not do that, you know, as far as the effort, strain, finish, I still felt it was there.”

The Jets’ postgame locker room was filled with frustration as multiple players said they were embarrᴀssed by the loss to the Bills.

Ulbrich said he understood why the players felt that way.

“It’s as frustrating as it gets,” Ulbrich said. “They are a rival and we do relish this opportunity to compete against one of the best, and in the past, we’ve played them a whole lot better than this, and to go out there and have the results that we had, it’s maddening, it’s frustrating, and there’s definitely an element of some boiling over with some individuals, and not to say that it’s right, but I do understand it.”

Ulbrich was asked to give his ᴀssessment of edge rusher Haason Reddick, who has half a sack and 11 tackles in nine games with the Jets.

Ulbrich said Reddick would admit that he wishes he had more production but then he praised Reddick for being unselfish, a rather stunning description of someone who held out for the first seven games of the season.

“The one thing that I can say about Haason with 100 percent certainty, and I feel just so honored to have coached him and been around him, is this guy’s willing to do whatever it takes, he’s one of the most unselfish players I’ve been around,” Ulbrich said, “and you just never know what you’re going to get when you get guys of his caliber, and sometimes they can be selfish in some ways, and there’s none of that to this man, and he’s done a great job to really put his arm around some of our younger guys too, and helping them with their progress and their development, so although production’s not there, Haason has provided a ton for our team and our defense.”

Ulbrich said rookie WR Malachi Corley injured his elbow in Sunday’s game.

The Jets claimed DT Phidarian Mathis off of waivers. Mathis is a 2022 second-round pick from Alabama. … The Jets also claimed LB Jamin Davis off waivers from the Vikings. They released K Anders Carlson and put S Chuck Clark on injured reserve to clear roster spots.
