Shock candidate emerges to be next head coach of New York Jets… despite being out of work for nine years

Former New York Jets coach Rex Ryan has teased a stunning return to his old team after revealing he ‘expects to be interviewed’ for their vacant head coaching position.

Ryan was at the helm in New York from 2009 to 2014 and has been off the sidelines for the last nine years, instead spending his time in the studio with ESPN.

Despite his lack of recent activity in the coaching world, Ryan believes he is in with a sH๏τ of returning to the Jets.

Speaking to Jake Asman on 880AM ESPN New York, Ryan revealed that he is anticipating speaking with the Jets when the regular season ends next weekend.

The Jets are out of playoff contention and have been without a permanent head coach since they fired Robert Saleh at the start of October.

Despite having Aaron Rodgers healthy for the entire season, it has been a woeful year for the team, who have a 4-12 record and gave up 40 points against the Bills on Sunday.

They have won just two games of their 11 since Saleh was let go, with Jeff Ulbrich taking temporary charge of the team.

Ryan, meanwhile, is a Super Bowl champion with the Baltimore Ravens when he was a defensive line coach under Brian Billick.

He went on to become the team’s defensive coordinator and ᴀssistant head coach, before taking his first HC role with the Jets in 2009.

He then had two seasons as Buffalo Bills head coach, before being replaced by Sean McDermott at the end of the 2016 season.

Following his Bills dismissal he signed a deal with ESPN to provide analysis on Super Bowl LI, before joining on a more permanent basis for the 2017 season.

He has since been an ever-present on fans’ television screens for NFL games, but is seemingly now eyeing a return to the sideline.

Meanwhile, the Jets are also set to speak to Ron Rivera this week, in the first head coaching interview since Saleh’s exit.
