Washington Commanders pay tribute to Jimmy Carter after ex-president’s death with silence before Atlanta game

Before the start of Sunday Night Football, the Washington Commanders paid tribute to Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States who pᴀssed away on Sunday at age 100 in his home state of Georgia.

NBC’s cameras panned to a sH๏τ of the White House before showing black-and-white pH๏τos of him while he occupied the Oval Office.

The moment of silence was then held at Northwest Stadium, while the scoreboard also paid tribute to the former President, another black-and-white pH๏τo of Carter.

The Commanders played the Falcons, the NFL team in Carter’s home state, on Sunday night in the Washington DC suburbs.

Carter celebrated his 100th birthday in October and announced years ago he would spend his final days in hospice care.

His son Chip Carter, 74, confirmed the former president had died in his Georgia home on Sunday around 3.40 pm ET.

Following a string of hospital stays he decided against more medical treatment and entered hospice care in February 2023.

The Nobel Peace Prize winner lived out his final years in Plains, Georgia.

Carter’s wife of 77 years, Rosalynn, was by his side until her pᴀssing on November 19, 2023 aged 96.

At 100 years old, Carter was the longest-lived former president in America’s history.

His four years as president were blighted by an oil crisis that forced Americans to line up for gas and the Iran hostage crisis that stretched into the final minutes of his administration before Ronald Reagan took over.
