The only good news for the Jets out of Sunday’s loss to the Rams is they are now one day closer to the end of this miserable season.
The Rams scored 13 unanswered fourth-quarter points to beat the Jets, 19-9, at a frosty MetLife Stadium.
The loss drops the Jets to 4-11 with two games left as they play out the string. The Rams are 9-6 and in first place in the NFC West.
The Jets actually moved the ball in this game but were allergic to the end zone, a problem that has persisted through much of the year.
They had three possessions of 14 plays or more, gained 321 total yards and did not punt all game … and scored nine points.
This is only the second time since 1940 a team did not punt in a game and scored fewer than 10 points, according to ESPN.
“It’s been all year,” quarterback Aaron Rodgers said. “I think that’s what needs to clean up moving forward for some of these guys to reach their full potential is to just lock in on the details. And that’s not just this offense. Whatever comes next after this, there’s going to be important details in every offense. And that’s just the little tweaks that are the difference between explosive gains or conversions and turnover on downs.”
While the Jets held the ball for long stretches without scoring, the Rams had three possessions of six plays or less that resulted in 16 points.
Rodgers threw for a good number of yards (256) but had a fourth-down incompletion in the end zone and costly fumble.
On a third-and-7 with 11:43 left in the game and the game tied 9-9, Rodgers held the ball too long and was sacked by Kam Curl.
He fumbled the ball and Jared Verse recovered it at the Jets’ 21.
Three plays later, Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford hit тιԍнт end Tyler Higbee for an 11-yard touchdown and a 16-9 lead.
“Probably should have dealt the ball,” Rodgers said. “Looked like we were pretty [covered] to all the spots, but I think I should have gotten quick out of the pocket and just dumped it somewhere.”
Rams kicker Joshua Karty added a 45-yard field goal with 5:17 left to push the lead to 19-9 and put the game away.
Jets kicker Anders Carlson missed a 49-yard field goal attempt at the two-minute warning, ending any thought of late-game heroics.
It was the sixth time this season the Jets held a lead in the fourth quarter and lost, a franchise record.
The Jets have been playing out the string for a while now and that will continue next week in Buffalo and then for the season finale at home against the Dolphins.
The 2024 season was lost long before Sunday, so these games feel empty and meaningless. Sunday’s game felt even more pointless with a small crowd thanks to wind chills in the teens.
Things started off well for the Jets as they opened the game with their best drive of the season, going 99 yards on 14 plays.
The Jets mixed up the plays and got a number of people involved. Rodgers threw his 499th career touchdown to end the drive, finding Davante Adams in the back of the end zone for an 11-yard score.
Carlson missed the extra point, giving the Jets a 6-0 lead late in the first quarter.
But that would be the only touchdown the Jets would score all game, going 1-for-3 in the red zone.
“I don’t know if I’d say we struggled offensively,” Adams said. “We struggled to score. It’s kind of the same thing, I guess you could say, but in a way it’s more disappointing to be able to drive down the field. Moved the ball, just couldn’t punch it in. It’s kind of been the story of the season. Can’t really make sense of it.”
The Jets looked like they might take the game over after safety Tony Adams intercepted a Stafford pᴀss at their own 24 early in the second quarter.
The Jets failed to convert the takeaway into points, though. Jets interim coach Jeff Ulbrich made the curious decision to go for it on fourth-and-1 from the Jets’ 33 and Breece Hall got stuffed, turning the ball over to the Rams.
The Rams then went 33 yards in three plays, with Kyren Williams scoring a 2-yard touchdown with 6:22 left in the second quarter. Karty missed the extra point, keeping the score tied at 6-6.
Ulbrich made another fourth-down decision that did not work.
After the Jets mounted a nine-minute possession to open the second half, he went for it on fourth-and-4 from the Rams’ 13. Rodgers tried to hit Adams in the end zone and Rams cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon knocked it away.
“We had some momentum,” Ulbrich said. “I felt like their defense was on their heels a little bit and fatigued after a long drive. I thought we could finish the drive. I was looking for a touchdown.”
Rodgers said the Jets need to see who is a pro over these last two games.
“We’ve got to figure out what it means to be a professional,” Rodgers said. “I think that’s an important part of building culture. The last two weeks we can really see who’s on board moving forward and who is ready to get out. It’s just part of the game.”
