BBC Breakfast fans were left fuming after Matt Lucas appeared on the morning show on Friday.

Viewers were left frustrated and branded the interview a ‘car crash’ as the comedian, 50, teased a new show with his long time collaborator David Walliams. 

The Little Britain star appeared on the red sofa and discussed his latest book and possible new show with Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt.

But during the discussion, Matt repeatedly advertised his first novel, much to the frustrations of the BBC hosts, who told the comedian off.   

Naga began the show by revealing Matt has written his first novel, a children’s book, saying: ‘This is your latest book. Well, this is the paperback version of your first novel.’

Asked why he had written a children’s book the comedian joked that if his long time friend David could do it, then so could he.

Before Matt could finish telling the stars about his novel, the BBC hosts jumped in to tell the star off and explain he wasn’t allowed to advertise his new novel on the show

He told the show: ‘Well, I thought if [David] Walliams can do it, anyone can.’

He then joked that the pair were compeтιтive before complimenting his friend and calling him ‘the king’ and admitting he asked for advice before putting pen to paper. 

The Little Britain star then held up his book, explaining the plot. 

He told Naga and Charlie: ‘This book is a bit different. This is the Boy Who Slept Through Christmas.’

But before he could finish, the BBC hosts jumped in to tell the star off and explain he wasn’t allowed to advertise his new novel on the show.  

Naga said: ‘You’re not allowed to do that.’

Charlie Stayt added: ‘You come on here, and you’re breaking the rules already. David Walliams wouldn’t do that, you know? He knows the rules.’

But Matt continued anyway, telling the breakfast show his novel was a musical in book form and even came with songs. 

He said: ‘This is a stage musical in novel form because not everyone can get to the theatre, not everyone lives near the theatre and the theatre can be quite pricey.

‘And I was writing this children’s book, The Boy Who Slept Through Christmas and I thought one day I’d love this to be a stage musical, and then I decided to turn the book into a musical.

‘So there are 20 QR codes throughout the book, so people can hear the songs that I’ve written and recorded as they read. All the lyrics are at the back as well.’

Having ignored the hosts throughout the segment, Naga finished off the interview by telling he actor to ‘stop it’ after he cheekily tried to advertise his book for the last time. 

And Matt’s interview didn’t go down well with viewers either who took to social media to vent their frustration.

Fans of the BBC show shared their irritation with the comedian for advertising his project and breaking the rules, calling the slot more of an advert than an interview. 

They wrote: ‘This whole segment is advertising! #BBCBreakfast’

Another said: ‘You’re not allowed to promote your book but please come on to promote your book…#BBCBreakfast’ 

During his appearance on the show, Matt joked that he released ha book because he thought if his friend David could do it, then why couldn’t he (the two pictured together)

Matt’s new book is a ‘stage musical in novel form because not everyone can get to the theater’ and it even includes QR codes to take readers to song that Matt has written himself 

The comedian also teased he was working on a a new show with his longtime collaborator David but explained they would be playing themselves rather than characters (the pair pictured in Little Britain)

But others were frustrated that Matt had secured a book deal so quickly: ‘#BBCBreakfast Matt is a lovely guy, but yet again a normal writer would have to wait for years to get a book deal, even an advance. Some never make it.’

While some didn’t like Naga and Charlie’s interviewing style: ‘Getting p****d off with Naga & Charlie interviewing Matt Lucas, it’s obvious he can’t say anything about the upcoming project. #BBCBreakfast.’

But others didn’t like Matt’s take on grief, writing: ‘A book about a boy who’s lost his mum……but its a comedy?…..t**t #bbcbreakfast’.

While others simply branded it a ‘car crash interview’.

During his appearance he also teased his new show, telling Naga and Charlie that the comedy duo were reuniting but would not be returning to their Little Britain characters, instead starring as themselves.
