Emily Blunt teases potential Devil Wears Prada 2 as she confirms ‘there are rumblings’ about reuniting for a sequel

Emily Blunt hinted at the possibility of Devil Wears Prada sequel, as she confirmed there are ‘rumblings’ about making a follow-up film at the Red Sea Film Festival in Saudi Arabia on Thursday.

The actress, 41, famously starred as acid-tongued ᴀssistant Emily Charlton in the 2006 hit comedy, opposite Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway.

Speculation about a sequel to the iconic film has been rife for years, reaching a fever pitch in July when it was reported that Disney had brought on screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna, who adapted the original film from the 2003 novel of the same name.

While there has yet to be an official confirmation, Emily sparked new hopes for fans as she teased something was in the works.

Speaking during an In Conversation With event, the Oscar-nominated actress opened up about the impact of original film and the role it played in the trajectory of her acting career.

When asked if there was a chance of a sequel film, according to ᴅᴇᴀᴅline Emily told the excited crowd: ‘There [are] rumblings. There is stuff churning around. But I don’t know if I can confirm anything. But we would all be delighted.’

The Oppenheimer star – who received a Golden Globe nod for the original film – admitted that The Devil Wears Prada catapulted her career, as it allowed people to see the range she had as an actor.

She said: ‘Playing that character, who was so insane, it paved the way for people to see me more as a character actor rather than someone who should just be in period drama… a lot of British people are just subjected to wearing a garnet or a crown at some point.’

However, Emily confessed she never could have predicted the wild and enduring success of the film, which made $326.7 million worldwide from just a $35 million budget, and which continues to be beloved by fans 18 years later.

She said: ‘I just didn’t know anything back then. I remember my agent calling me on the opening weekend and saying, “It made this’. I was like, ‘Is that good?’

‘When we were filming it, we were weeping with laughter every day. We thought we were making something funny… but I didn’t know that it would become this thing that would catch fire in the way that it did… it’s quoted to me every week now.’

The original film was adapted from Lauren Weisberger’s book, which was loosely based on her time as an ᴀssistant to Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour.

The story follows Andy – played by Anne – a struggling journalist who manages lands a job as a junior personal ᴀssistant to the fearsome Miranda Priestley, the editor-in-chief of Runway Magazine.

She tries to use this experience to pave the way for better journalism opportunities, but struggles to survive in the cutthroat fashion world and cope with the fiery Miranda’s impossible demands.

Rumours about a long-awaited Devil Wears Prada 2, were seemingly confirmed in the summer, with Variety reporting a possible plot summary that would reunite Emily and Meryl.

The sequel was said to follow Miranda and her career in present day as traditional magazine publishing is on the decline.

She squares off with former-ᴀssistant Emily, who is said to be a high-powered executive for a luxury group, as Miranda is chasing her company’s ad dollars.

Emily previously broke her silence on the reports that she could reprise the iconic role in September, after being confronted about the veracity of the rumours by People.

She quipped: ‘What sequel?’ before adding: ‘Oh my god I can’t tell you anything!’

Referencing her character’s flawless appearance in the film, Emily teased: ‘Gonna get some good eye makeup going again right?’

She then went onto joke about how she’ll be getting back into character, with a reference to Emily’s battle with stomach flu, which helped her slim down to attend Paris Fashion Week.

The actress joked; ‘I’ve gotta get a stomach flu and some eye makeup in there. I’m hoping for that!’

Meanwhile, her brother-in-law, Stanley Tucci, recently said he would be ‘happy’ to return to his role as fan-favourite character Nigel Kipling for a follow-up film.

Speaking to People in October, the acclaimed actor said: ‘If it does happen, I can only say that I’ll be happy. I don’t really know. I haven’t [heard] about the plot or anything. I really haven’t.’

When asked if he thought reuniting with Meryl, Emily and Anne would be fun, he gushed: ‘I don’t think fun would be the word. I think we would have one of the best times ever.

‘It was just this perfect combination of people, from [director] David [Frankel] to Meryl to Annie, and Emily, who’s now my sister-in-law. It’s just great.

‘I’ve made many movies, I’ve probably made close to 100 movies, and I don’t even know how many television episodes, but that experience was one of the greatest experiences I’ve ever had’.

The update on the potential sequel comes just days after the musical adaptation of The Devil Wears Prada launched in London on Sunday.
